How much money would it take for you to finally feel secure?
More income? A paid-off house? A certain number in the bank?
The problem is that the number keeps moving.
In this episode of The Examined Life, we turn to the Roman philosopher Seneca and his surprisingly modern reflections on wealth, anxiety, and freedom.
Seneca does not argue that money is bad or that we should reject financial success. Money solves real problems. It gives us options, comfort, and protection against many of life's difficulties.
But money cannot answer a more fundamental question:
How much is enough?
Seneca argues that there are two ways to become richer. We can increase what we possess, or we can decrease what we require.
That distinction changes everything.
We explore why luxury so easily becomes necessity, why greater wealth does not necessarily produce greater peace, why the wealthy can remain anxious about money, and why Seneca believed the great prize of philosophy was liberty.
Money can increase our control over circumstances.
Philosophy can decrease the control circumstances have over us.
And that may be the more important kind of freedom.
In this episode:
• Why "enough" keeps moving
• The difference between natural needs and manufactured desires
• Why wealth can create new forms of anxiety
• How preferences become necessities
• Why acquiring more does not necessarily make us more secure
• Seneca's idea of philosophical wealth
• Why wisdom is worth more than money
• How philosophy teaches us what "enough" actually means
Seneca's challenge is not to hate money.
Earn it. Use it. Enjoy what it can provide. But do not ask wealth to make you free.
That is the work of philosophy.
