    Tania grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania, in a home shaped by instability and control. At 19 years old and three months pregnant, she entered prison carrying both fear and uncertainty about her future. Her father worked long hours, leaving her often under the care of a deeply controlling mother whose abuse would leave lasting emotional wounds.

    Becoming a mother herself at just 16, Tania moved from house to house trying to survive and find stability while raising her daughter. Through it all, her oldest brother became a source of guidance and support during some of the hardest moments of her life. In this episode, Tania reflects on the trauma she endured, the resilience it took to keep moving forward, and the complicated family dynamics that shaped her story.

    Thelma shares that prison was the first place she ever truly felt safe. Inside, she discovered purpose and stability through the dog program, where she helped raise and train dogs. For Thelma, that work became a source of healing, responsibility, and connection. Looking back, she speaks honestly about how she believes her life could have taken a very different and much darker path if she had never entered the prison system—and how unexpected moments of care and purpose changed her sense of survival and self.
