Adam Silver dropped a bombshell at the NBA Board of Governors meeting: the long-expected return of the Seattle SuperSonics is "no longer a lock." With Las Vegas locked in a bidding war that could push its expansion fee past $10 billion, Seattle's lone bid group is anchored at $6 billion — and the league is now dangling Mexico City as a rival to pressure local investors to step up.

The real story isn't the number. It's why only one group is even bidding. Sean breaks down how Seattle's business climate — punishing taxes, chronic office vacancy, rising crime, and a city that has driven its wealthiest residents to lower-tax states — has made the world's most attractive franchise slot unattractive to the same tech elite who made the Emerald City famous. Climate Pledge Arena is already built for basketball. The billionaire appetite just isn't there.

The Mexico City gambit looks like a classic real-estate broker move: introduce a rival offer to drive up Seattle's price. But it only works as leverage because Seattle has made itself so easy to threaten. With alternative venues like Marysville and the Tulalip corridor now being floated, the franchise geography is genuinely in play in ways it wasn't a year ago.

For Sean, this one's personal — he's a lifelong Sonics fan who still holds the Payton and Kemp era as some of the best sports memories the Pacific Northwest ever produced. Subscribe to @reasonablenews for daily commentary on the stories the mainstream media won't tell straight.
