Dinosaurs. Lasers. Futuristic armour. Evil aliens. What more could you possibly want? This week on The Insanely Dangerous Retropodshow, Dangerous Dave heads back to 1988 to celebrate one of the most gloriously bonkers toy lines of the decade — Dino-Riders!We begin with What Happened Way Back When?, revisiting the music, movies and television of 1988, including Guns N’ Roses, Belinda Carlisle, Die Hard, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Beetlejuice, Red Dwarf and The Wonder Years. Then Retro Headlines remembers some of the major stories making news in Britain and America.🦖 DANGEROUS DEEP DIVE – DINO-RIDERSDave explores the history of the Dino-Riders toy line and the wonderfully simple idea behind it:Kids love dinosaurs. Kids love lasers. PUT LASERS ON THE DINOSAURS!We meet the heroic Valorians, led by Questar, and the evil Rulons, commanded by the brilliantly bizarre Emperor Krulos. There's a detailed look at the story behind their journey to prehistoric Earth, the Valorians' relationship with the dinosaurs and the Rulons' sinister Brain Boxes, which allowed them to control the prehistoric beasts. Then it's into the toy box as Dave remembers some of the greatest Dino-Riders releases, including the Triceratops, Stegosaurus, Deinonychus, flying creatures, enormous sauropods and, of course...THE T-REX!Because apparently a Tyrannosaurus Rex wasn't dangerous enough already.Someone decided it needed futuristic armour and bloody laser cannons as well. And we salute them for it.Dave also revisits the short-lived animated series and asks why a cartoon with dinosaurs, time travel, aliens and futuristic warfare didn't last much longer.📺 WHY DID DINO-RIDERS DISAPPEAR?The Dangerous Deep Dive also examines the problems facing Dino-Riders.The toys were spectacular...But the biggest sets were expensive. The cartoon didn't last long enough to establish its characters properly. And Dino-Riders entered a toy market already overflowing with Transformers, He-Man, M.A.S.K., Ghostbusters, G.I. Joe and the rapidly emerging Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Was Dino-Riders a failure?Or simply a brilliant idea released at the wrong time?🚧 DANGEROUS DETOURThis week's Dangerous Detour looks at the wider world of forgotten 1980s toy lines. Why did franchises like Visionaries, Bravestarr, Starcom, Centurions and Dino-Riders disappear while others survived for decades?Dave looks at the importance of cartoons, toy prices, shelf space, changing childhood tastes and the growing influence of video games.📼 BACK IN THE ADSWe're rewinding British television again as Back in the Ads remembers the legendary Milk Tray Man.A mysterious bloke dressed in black risking life and limb...Climbing cliffs...Swimming through dangerous waters...Sneaking into buildings...All to leave behind a box of chocolates. Why?All because the lady loves Milk Tray.Dave remembers the history and impact of one of British advertising's most recognisable characters.🥊 RETRO RUMBLE – DINO-RIDERS VS M.A.S.K.It's dinosaurs versus transforming vehicles!Dino-Riders vs M.A.S.K.!The two franchises battle across concept, toys, cartoons, originality and legacy.Dino-Riders puts up one hell of a fight...But M.A.S.K. narrowly takes the Retro Rumble victory 3–2.⚠️ DANGEROUSLY UNDERRATEDDave returns to the Dino-Riders animated series and argues that its biggest problem wasn't quality...It was that we simply didn't get enough of it.The world had enormous potential for new dinosaurs, characters, Rulon factions and adventures, but the series disappeared before it could properly develop.🧸 TOYBOX TIME MACHINEThe Toybox Time Machine shrinks everything down as we remember...Micro Machines!Tiny cars.Tiny playsets.Tiny vehicles that somehow ended up underneath every piece of furniture in the house.Dave remembers the toys, the brilliant playsets and those unforgettable fast-talking television adverts.🚨 WHERE THE HELL IS GAZ?Normally this would be the point where we hear from Gaz.There's just one slight problem this week...Gaz is missing.Last reports suggest he somehow got himself stranded on prehistoric Earth. We've tried contacting him...Nothing.We've sent Questar to look for him...Nothing.Apparently somebody spotted him running away from a Rulon-controlled T-Rex earlier...So we're sure he's absolutely fine.Probably.Therefore...NO GAZ SEGMENT THIS WEEK!Hopefully Gaz can find the S.T.E.P. device, avoid being eaten and make his way back to the present in time for Episode 7.Good luck, Gaz.You're going to need it.☢️ THE DANGER ZONEFinally, Dave enters The Danger Zone to answer the big question:Did Dino-Riders deserve to become as big as Transformers, He-Man and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?Perhaps not quite...But it certainly deserved to become much bigger than it did.The toys were spectacular. The concept was fantastic. The potential was enormous. What Dino-Riders lacked was enough time to develop its characters and universe.Dave awards Dino-Riders an impressive:51 OUT OF 60⭐⭐⭐...
