Episode 3: Hair Loss Is Not All in Your Head – When You Know Something Has Changed
In Episode 3 of Let’s Talk About It With Kelly, presented by Freedom Clinic Toronto, host Kelly Ranney is joined by renowned Certified Clinical Trichologist John Ranney to discuss a frustrating experience many people with hair loss face: being told that nothing is wrong, that their hair loss is normal, or that it is “all in their head.”
Hair loss is not always obvious to someone seeing you for the first time. You may notice increased shedding, a thinner ponytail, a wider part, reduced density, changes at the hairline, more visible scalp, or changes in the texture and quality of your hair long before the loss becomes dramatic enough for others to recognize.
John explains why early hair loss can sometimes be overlooked during a routine medical examination and why a person’s own observations and history can be extremely important. Hair loss is often gradual, and without previous photographs, measurements, microscopic examination or a detailed history, subtle changes may be difficult to identify.
Kelly and John discuss the importance of taking hair-loss concerns seriously and investigating possible causes rather than simply dismissing them. They explore conditions that may cause hair shedding, thinning or changes in density, including androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, traction alopecia, inflammatory scalp conditions and scarring alopecia.
The conversation also looks at how trichoscopy, microscopic hair and scalp analysis, pull testing, medical history, blood work and scalp biopsy when appropriate can provide important information when determining why someone is losing their hair.
They also discuss common triggers and contributing factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, stress, illness, medications, nutritional deficiencies, thyroid disorders, autoimmune conditions, scalp inflammation and major life or health events.
Most importantly, this episode explores the value of early assessment and early intervention. Identifying a hair-loss condition before significant density has been lost may provide more treatment options and a better opportunity to preserve existing hair.
Topics include early signs of hair loss, unexplained hair shedding, female hair loss, male hair loss, thinning hair, widening hair part, hair loss diagnosis, hair loss blood tests, trichoscopy, scalp analysis, telogen effluvium, androgenetic alopecia, scarring alopecia, hair loss treatment, hair regrowth, and when to see a hair loss specialist or trichologist.
If you feel that your hair has changed, your concerns deserve to be properly evaluated. Hair loss is not always obvious—and it is not necessarily all in your head.
