概要
A sealed archive box held a rust-colored ink entry dated September 4, 1961 - the same date a tower warden fell to his death - and a 2019 entry on the same page bore identical wind readings in a different hand; a forensic examiner could not rule out that both entries were written by the same hand. How could two entries, decades apart and kept miles apart, align so precisely, and what does that mean for a death once closed as accidental?
In this episode, we tell what happened at Sutter Ridge and follow the records, routines, and people tied to that logbook page to see how the document resurfaced and why the matching entries matter. What does the paper trail - and the unexplained similarities between the entries - reveal about the past and the person who found the page?
Person: Carl Benton
Date: September 4, 1961
Person: Crystal Long
Date: September 4, 2019
Location: Sutter Ridge tower
Event: Logbook entry comparison with forensic examiner unable to rule out same hand
- Benton wrote a nine o'clock log entry on September 4, 1961 reading "North-northwest, fourteen knots, gusting twenty-two" in rust-colored ink.
- The 1961 log page was removed before 1980 by Forest Service investigator Dale Murch and placed in a sealed archive box at the Harwick County depot, forty miles from the tower.
- Crystal Long arrived at Sutter Ridge on August 21, 2019 and made a nine o'clock wind entry on September 4, 2019 reading "North-northwest, fourteen knots, gusting twenty-two."
- The bottom third of Benton's 1961 page was left blank, as if he expected to add something later.
- On the night of September 4, 2019 the tower door latch stopped moving for roughly two minutes around eleven o'clock and then released on its own.
