Metallica Returns to Salt Lake City | Salt Lake City News

Utah lawmakers are pushing a bold new bill that would let citizens sue federal immigration agents like ICE in civil court — a move designed to crack down on misconduct and hold agents accountable for violating constitutional rights. Inspired by the case of Danilo Beltran, a man detained without cause and left sick in custody, the legislation seeks to strip federal officers of immunity when they operate within state borders. Senate Minority Leader Luz Escamilla argues this is essential to ensure federal agents follow proper procedures and respect basic rights — because without legal consequences, there’s no incentive to behave properly. While critics warn proving violations will remain difficult, supporters believe this is the only way to create real accountability for agents who currently have no legal recourse when their actions go wrong — especially for immigrants with clean records trying to build lives in Utah.

Utah’s starting QB Devon Dampier is secretly the biggest fan of his backup, Byrd Ficklin—pushing hard for him to get more reps this season. Ficklin, a dual-threat weapon who shined as a starter last year, is now being used in wild ways: running routes, lining up in the backfield, even taking snaps. The coaching staff’s bold move? Letting Ficklin thrive from day one—not just when injured. Dampier calls him “little brother” and sees him as someone he’s preparing to surpass, while Ficklin’s already earned leadership council status in just his second year. Highlights are flying too—a viral cross-body pass racked up over a million views. With smart workload management, Ficklin’s becoming Utah’s most unpredictable weapon, turning every play into a potential highlight reel.

Small business owners are feeling cautiously optimistic about their current situation but are holding off on big investments due to economic uncertainty. The optimism index dipped slightly in August, and future outlooks are dimmer than before, fueled by lingering effects of July’s boost, policy shifts, and weak consumer spending expectations. Labor shortages—especially in construction and manufacturing—remain a top concern, alongside inflation and taxes, keeping businesses on the sidelines until the fog clears.

Salt Lake City Police are doubling down on license plate reader cameras, defending them as vital for catching thieves, violent criminals, and hit-and-run drivers — even as other Utah cities pull back over privacy concerns. They claim data is auto-deleted after nine months unless tied to an active case, and they never sell or share it. The department cites concrete uses: tracking wanted suspects, locating missing persons, and recovering stolen vehicles. Governor Spencer Cox, though uneasy about privacy, has launched a statewide review to ensure accountability. While the debate underscores the growing tension between public safety tech and civil liberties, Salt Lake City insists its protocols strike the right balance — for now.

Alex Murdaugh’s retrial is officially headed to Sumter County after Judge Debra McCaslin ruled Colleton County was too tainted by media frenzy and jury bias from his first trial — which was overturned by the South Carolina Supreme Court. Despite pushing for alternatives like Charleston or Richland, Sumter emerged as the fairest option, offering security and infrastructure without the deep local ties and juror disqualifications that plagued Colleton. Murdaugh’s civil suit against former Clerk Becky Hill, alleging jury tampering, was dismissed but he’s appealing. The judge also rejected bringing in an out-of-county jury to cut costs and logistics. Pre-trial hearings begin November 13th, motions due October 30th, with the retrial set for April 2027.

Lindsay Clancy’s lawyer is demanding jury sequestration in a potential retrial — an extreme, rarely-used tactic to shield jurors from outside news — even though he admits it likely wouldn’t have changed the outcome. The original mistrial ended after seven days of deliberation, with 11 jurors siding with not guilty by reason of insanity, but one holding out for guilty. Clancy faced murder charges for killing her three children, with prosecutors arguing intent and defense claiming she suffered from postpartum psychosis. Meanwhile, prosecutors are still deciding whether to retry her, while another woman, Dawn Light, faces jury intimidation charges for allegedly photographing jurors — adding layers of legal drama and public scrutiny to an already high-stakes case.
