This sermon is based on John 8 where Jesus is having a conversation with Jews who think that being descendants of Abraham is enough. Their focus was on their bloodline. Jesus challenges them in this thought as he welcomes anyone who receives His Word to truly be His disciples.

In John 5, we meet a man who has been looking for what he needs for the past 38 years. He's an invalid -- and he's come to a pool of water which he believes can heal him. But, something always gets in the way.

We may not hold the same superstitious beliefs as the invalid from John 5 -- but to be sure - you and I are also on the lookout. We're looking for things to give us security, identity, and meaning. We're trying to find the "water" that will refresh and sustain us.

So what do we mean?

We hear about the "facts" in the world that support this: animals going into extinction, river beds drying up, ice caps melting, and a consistent rise in global temperatures (so far as we have been documenting them).

But what's the point? For some, the point IS to raise fear + concern, because that (some believe) will arouse activity to reverse what we see. For others, the silencing of these "facts" serves to encourage our own procuring from creation its many benefits.

These are the two narratives we're often presented with. But is there a third?
