Today we remember Saint Hilarion, the first native Russian Metropolitan of Kiev, who served during the time of Prince Yaroslav the Wise. He was known for his deep spiritual life, theological knowledge, and his important role in establishing the independence of the Russian Church from Constantinople. Saint Hilarion is especially remembered for his theological work, the “Discourse Concerning Law and Grace,” which explains the place of the Russian Church in salvation history and celebrates the Christian faith of the Russian people. His legacy continues in the Church’s prayers and writings.
