Can a brief parenting intervention make a lasting difference after suspected child abuse? This episode of Parent Lab examines the Safer Kids trial and explains the distinction between early improvement and benefits that persist. The randomized study followed 112 families with children aged two to twelve through Swedish child-welfare services. Three questions drive the episode: why cumulative abuse reports favored Safer Kids while time to the first new report did not; what the moderate difference in parent-rated child mental health represented; and how longer follow-up changed the story told by the early results. We also explore the program's earlier pilot, related behavioral parenting research, and interviews describing parents' experiences of participation. The central limitation is measurement: official reports reflect detection and reporting as well as what happens within families, making the translation from fewer reports to less actual abuse uncertain. The analysis draws on the published 2026 abstract, the earlier full trial report, the doctoral thesis summary, and related research. What becomes visible when researchers keep following families long after the parenting course ends?
