Jennifer Kolis’s road to the Detroit music scene wasn’t exactly a straight path. She’s worked in business. She’s been a caregiver. She went back to school to help others. She battled ovarian cancer while her father and brother were facing cancer too. And along the way, life forced her to start over more than once. Then came Tuesday nights. What started as a weekly “date night” with herself at local open mics, a latte, dessert, some drawing and live music—slowly became something more. Jennifer started recording artists. Sharing their music. Introducing musicians to each other. Making connections. Bringing brownies and cookies. Giving out double hugs. And most importantly… making people feel like somebody noticed them. That eventually became Detroit Music Scene. In just six months, Jennifer has turned that simple idea into a growing platform connecting Detroit’s music community through artists, production, photography, videography, networking, branding and marketing. Her philosophy is simple: Musicians supporting musicians. Everybody gets stronger when we stop treating the person next to us like competition. And behind it all are words from her late mother that still guide her: “All I ask is that I leave an indelible mark on the hearts of those whom I have encountered.” Sometimes life takes you down a road you never expected and somehow leads you exactly where you’re supposed to be. Jennifer may jokingly say, “I have no idea what I’m doing. I’m just a girl who leads with her heart.” But maybe that’s exactly why it’s working. We’re excited to introduce you to Jennifer Kolis and Detroit Music Scene.
