She was getting paid $10 a day at her first internship. She showed up every single day anyway. That mindset helped launch a career that would take her from a major New York network to two Emmy Awards and eventually to building a business of her own.

This week on Welloff, Gina Simm and Dr. Tara sit down with two time Emmy Award winning journalist Kimberly Buk, founder of KJ Media and Consulting and co- founder of Elevate Leadership.

Kimberly shares what it really takes to break into broadcast journalism, why she walked away from full time anchor roles to build her own path, and how she went from intern to entrepreneur, working with clients like News 12 New Jersey, leading public speaking workshops and MCing more than 40 events a year.

She also opens up about balancing life as a journalist, entrepreneur and first time mom, and the pressure that comes with always being the person who has it together.

Then the conversation takes a deeply personal turn. Kimberly shares the heartbreaking story of losing her friend Dave to suicide and why she and co founder Jeff Massone are dedicating part of their upcoming Elevate Leadership conference to an important conversation about mental health and the struggles people can hide behind a smile.

It’s an honest conversation about ambition, reinvention, motherhood, grief and the reminder that you never really know what someone else is carrying.

If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
