Carnegie Hall, built by gilded age steel magnate and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, who immigrated to the United States from Scotland as a boy, opened its doors in New York City in 1891 and has become one of the world’s most celebrated concert halls.
In this episode of Your History Your Story, our guest is Gino Francesconi, Carnegie Hall’s Founding Archivist and Historian Emeritus.
Gino began his journey at Carnegie Hall as an usher and ultimately became the director of its Archives and the Rose Museum, dedicating decades to preserving and sharing the Hall’s remarkable history. He’ll tell us fascinating stories about some of the legendary performers he encountered there, as well as the history behind the Hall itself. Gino will include a look back to May 5, 1891, recreating the atmosphere of opening night, when the great composer Tchaikovsky took the stage. We hope you enjoy this journey into the history of Carnegie Hall with Gino Francesconi.
