Mindful Bedtimes – Giving Your Mind a Soft Landing

Helping children discover how mindfulness can help their bodies relax and their thoughts settle at the end of the day, and showing them how simple breathing, reflection, and imagination can create a peaceful transition towards rest.

In this episode of Mindful Moments with Miss Harrison’s Mindfulness for Everyday Life series, children explore how to bring mindfulness into one of the quietest parts of their day—bedtime.

Children learn that although their bodies may be ready to rest, their minds can sometimes still be carrying the day with them. Worries, excitement, things they need to remember, and big feelings can become tangled together just when everything around them becomes quiet.

Through Freya’s story, children meet someone who finds bedtime difficult because her thoughts bounce around “like popcorn in a pan.” Her dad suggests giving her mind a “soft landing.” Together, they dim the lights, imagine Freya’s thoughts as clouds floating across the sky, take slow breaths, and remember one good thing from the day. Gradually, Freya’s thoughts begin to settle and her body relaxes into the mattress.

The episode introduces a simple mindful bedtime routine: breathe and stretch, let go of the day, and reflect with kindness. Children learn that they don't need to solve every thought before bedtime—they can notice thoughts and then allow them to move on.

Children are also introduced to a magical Bedtime Star Jar. Each imaginary or real star can hold a kind thought, happy memory, moment of gratitude, or quiet hope for tomorrow, gradually creating a collection of positive moments to return to.

This episode encourages children to create their own gentle bedtime routine and discover how peaceful habits can help signal to their minds and bodies that the day is finished and it is time to rest.

What children will learn in this episode:

  • Why thoughts and feelings can sometimes become busy at bedtime
  • How mindfulness can help the mind and body begin to slow down
  • How breathing and gentle stretching can support relaxation
  • How to notice thoughts without needing to hold onto them
  • How reflecting on something positive can help bring the day to a peaceful close
  • How to create a Bedtime Star Jar as part of a mindful evening routine

Emotional Skills from Miss Harrison:

Breathe and stretch
Take three slow breaths and gently stretch your body, allowing your muscles to begin relaxing after the day.

Let your thoughts float away
Imagine thoughts as clouds or balloons. Notice them without chasing them and allow them to drift away.

Reflect with kindness
Ask yourself, “What made me smile today? What did I try my best at? What am I thankful for?”

Give your mind a soft landing
Create a gentle routine that tells your mind and body that the day is finished and you can begin to rest.

These skills help children develop relaxation strategies, reflection, emotional awareness, and healthy routines for moving from the activity of the day towards a calmer bedtime.

Mindful Moment Challenge:

This week, choose one mindful practice to add to your bedtime routine.

It might be:

A slow breath.
A gentle stretch.
Watching an imaginary thought float away.
Adding something positive to your Bedtime Star Jar.

Try it for a few nights and notice whether your body and thoughts begin to slow down.

Perfect for:

  • Primary school-aged children developing peaceful bedtime routines
  • Families looking for gentle ways to help children wind down
  • Classrooms exploring mindfulness, emotional wellbeing, and healthy routines
  • Teachers and pastoral leaders introducing relaxation and reflection strategies
  • Children learning how to settle busy thoughts at the end of the day

Quote of the Week:

"The day is done. I can rest now."
