Mindfulness in School – Finding Calm in Busy Learning Moments

Helping children understand how small moments of mindfulness can help them stay present, calm, and focused during the school day, and showing them how to pause, breathe, and begin again when learning feels busy, frustrating, or difficult.

In this episode of Mindful Moments with Miss Harrison’s Mindfulness for Everyday Life series, children explore how mindfulness can become part of everyday life at school. They learn that classrooms can be exciting and interesting places, but that sounds, people, questions, mistakes, and challenging learning can sometimes leave their minds feeling full.

Through Amira’s story, children experience one of those school days when everything seems to go wrong. She forgets her homework, spills water on her desk, and then her pencil snaps in the middle of a maths problem. With tight shoulders and a noisy head, Amira feels like giving up. Then she remembers three simple words from her teacher: “Pause. Breathe. Begin again.” She takes a breath, speaks kindly to herself, picks up a new pencil, and returns to her work. The problems haven't disappeared, but they suddenly feel more manageable.

The episode introduces children to three simple strategies they can use during learning: an Anchor Breath before beginning a task, focusing on one thing at a time, and using kind self-talk when something feels difficult.

Children also create their own Learning Pause Plan—a simple three-stage strategy of Breathe → Notice → Reset that they can keep in their desk, backpack, or simply remember whenever they need to return their attention to the present moment.

This episode encourages children to recognise that mindfulness doesn't make difficult learning disappear. Instead, it gives them practical tools to meet challenges with greater calm, focus, patience, and kindness towards themselves.

What children will learn in this episode:

  • What mindfulness can look like during an ordinary school day
  • How a short pause can help when learning begins to feel overwhelming
  • How to use an Anchor Breath before beginning a task
  • Why focusing on one thing at a time can make learning feel more manageable
  • How kind self-talk can help when they make mistakes or become stuck
  • How to use a Learning Pause Plan to breathe, notice, reset, and begin again

Emotional Skills from Miss Harrison:

Use an Anchor Breath
Before beginning your work, take one slow breath and imagine it anchoring you like a boat resting on calm water.

Focus on one thing at a time
Bring your attention to what is in front of you right now—this sentence, this number, this question—rather than everything else you need to do.

Talk kindly to yourself
When learning feels difficult, remind yourself: “I can do hard things,” “I'm learning, and that takes time,” or “It's okay to try again.”

Pause and begin again
When your brain feels full or frustration begins to grow, breathe, notice what you're thinking and feeling, and choose one kind action to take next.

These skills help children build concentration, perseverance, emotional regulation, positive self-talk, and practical strategies for responding calmly when learning becomes challenging.

Mindful Moment Challenge:

This week, try using your Learning Pause Plan once each school day.

Breathe — Take one slow breath in and out.

Notice — Ask yourself, “What am I thinking? What am I feeling?”

Reset — Choose one kind thought or action you can take next.

Then return to your learning and begin again.

Perfect for:

  • Primary school-aged children developing focus and emotional regulation
  • Classrooms exploring PSHE, mindfulness, resilience, and learning behaviours
  • Families helping children manage frustration around schoolwork or homework
  • Teachers and pastoral leaders supporting children during challenging learning
  • Children developing concentration, positive self-talk, and perseverance

Quote of the Week:

"Pause. Breathe. Begin again."
