Generation X grew up during one of the biggest transformations of the American family in modern history.

Divorce rates soared during the 1960s and '70s, reaching historic highs just as Gen X was growing up. More than a million American children a year were being affected by divorce by the 1970s.

So what happened?

Was it no-fault divorce? Feminism? Women entering the workforce? The sexual revolution? Were our parents simply giving up on marriage—or were people finally gaining the freedom to leave relationships previous generations had been expected to endure?

In Episode 2 of this Gen X series, we're looking beyond the nostalgia to explore why divorce became so common during our childhood, what “broken home” actually meant, and what millions of Gen X kids experienced while the definition of the American family was changing around them.

And this leads directly into our next conversation: What did watching our parents' relationships teach Gen X about love, marriage and commitment?

That one we're doing LIVE—and I want your stories.

Did your parents divorce? Did they stay together? Do you think their relationship affected the way you approached your own?

Tell me about it in the comments.
