Generation X has become known as the “latchkey generation.”

We came home from school, unlocked the door, called Mom at work, made ourselves something to eat, watched TV—and somehow managed not to burn the house down before our parents got home.

But why were so many of us home alone in the first place?

In this episode, we're going beyond the Gen X nostalgia to look at what was happening to the American family during the 1970s and '80s: more mothers entering the workforce, changing economic realities, limited after-school childcare, single-parent households, and a culture that expected kids to become independent much earlier.

And then there's the bigger question:

What did growing up that way do to us?

Did being latchkey kids make Gen X independent, resourceful and self-reliant? Or did some of us also learn that needing other people was something we should avoid?

And this is only the beginning. Next time, we're looking at another major change happening while Gen X was growing up: the divorce boom.

Were you a latchkey kid? Tell me your story in the comments. How old were you when you started staying home alone—and do you think it shaped the adult you became?
