What if the miracle everyone wanted came with a price no one bothered to tell you about? At the beginning of the twentieth century, radium seemed almost magical. It was rare, extraordinarily valuable and celebrated as a scientific breakthrough that could transform medicine, consumer products and even something as ordinary as a watch. During World War I, young women were hired to paint luminous numbers onto watches and military instruments using radium-based paint. The jobs were coveted. The pay was good, the work was considered glamorous, and the women were taught a simple technique to keep their tiny brushes sharp: Lip. Dip. Paint. They were told it was safe. Then the women began getting sick. Teeth loosened. Jaws deteriorated. Bones fractured. Mysterious illnesses appeared years after some of them had left the factories. When the women began questioning whether their work was responsible, they found themselves fighting not only for their lives, but to be believed.
