    Hosts Dallen Stanford & Robin MacDowell are joined by legends Shiray & Gillies Kaka for #RugbyHive Episode 36.

    Shiray Kaka is a Black Ferns 7s sensation representing New Zealand on the world stage since 2013, earning recognition for her incredible work rate and try-scoring ability. She has been a key player in the Black Ferns 7s success, winning a Gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Silver medal at the 2022 Rugby World Cup 7s in Cape Town and Bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Over the last decade New Zealand has won the Sevens World Series in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2023.

    Gillies Kaka played for the All Blacks 7s from 2013 to 2016, winning Sevens World Series titles in 2013 and 2014, and represented New Zealand at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He was known for his leadership, speed and vision on the field, helping New Zealand win Silver at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

    After retiring, Gillies made the transition into coaching, bringing his experience and knowledge to the next generation of players. Together, Gillies and Shiray have built impressive careers in rugby, while balancing family life and supporting each other's growth on and off the field.

    In this episode, we dive into Gillies and Shiray’s backgrounds, their journey in rugby, and their path to represent their country at the Olympic Games. We delve in Gillies’ transition to a Cowboy, and from player to coach after turning down a ‘real’ job, exploring his coaching ambitions and his experience representing MacDowell Rugby and Canada at the 2024 Global Youth Sevens. We hear from Shiray about her Gold medal highs and lows, plus how she found coaching the next generation of Canadian talent at the 2024 Global Youth Sevens.

Scurfield is a Canadian rugby sensation who played a pivotal role in securing a Silver Medal for Rugby Canada at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Known for her electric speed and unmatched resilience, Krissy’s rise to the top of international rugby has been nothing short of extraordinary. Originally from the picturesque town of Canmore, Alberta, nestled in the Canadian Rockies, Krissy’s early years were defined by a love for sports, particularly ice hockey. She grew up playing on the ice, embodying the quintessential Canadian spirit, before making a transformative switch to rugby. This transition wasn’t just about changing sports; it was about embracing new challenges and opportunities on the global stage. After her debut on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, Krissy quickly became a standout player, and in 2022, she earned a spot on the Vancouver Sevens Dream Team. During the 2023/2024 Series, Scurfield scored 20 tries in 37 matches. Scurfield’s road to the Paris Olympics was a tough one, marked by both triumphs and setbacks. Despite an injury during the Games, Krissy showed incredible grit and determination, helping Canada secure a historic Silver Medal.     Sedrick is an American 7s player from Salt Lake City, Utah, who has represented Team USA on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series since 2021 and competed at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games winning a Bronze Medal. She scored one of the most iconic tries in rugby sevens history this year, with an 85-meter solo effort in the final play of the Bronze Medal match against Australia, then kicked the conversion to win the first ever medal in sevens for Team USA! It was a pivotal moment for rugby in North America, resulting in trailblazing businesswoman and investor Michele Kang immediately donating $4 million to the USA women's sevens team.

    Sedrick debuted for the USA Eagles at the 2021 Dubai Sevens, placed 4th at the 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Cape Town and won Gold at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. She also won the Premier Rugby Sevens title with the Northern Loonies in 2021 and in 2023 won the United Championship with the Rocky Mountain Experts.

    In this episode we talk about how Sedrick found rugby at Herriman High School, her journey playing the sport collegiately at Life University and winning the prestigious MA Sorensen Award for the top collegiate women’s rugby player in the country. We talk about her time playing in the Premier Rugby Sevens including two years being coached by Robin with the Northern Loonies. We delve into “that iconic match-winning try” plus the whole 2024 Paris Olympic Games experience including the record crowds for women’s sevens rugby! Sedrick also reveals more about being on Team USA with sensation Ilona Maher and how she will do on Dancing with the Stars!
