Rhino Resilience Podcast
Strength for Rural Life

Rural life is strong—but it’s also heavy.

Long days. Quiet pressure. Responsibility that doesn’t stop. And an unspoken belief that you’re supposed to handle it all on your own.

The Rhino Resilience Podcast is here to change that.

Hosted by Chris “Rhino” Swenson, a licensed mental health therapist with over 20 years of experience serving rural communities, this podcast is built for people who carry a lot—and don’t always have a place to put it down.

This isn’t therapy.
This is real talk, real tools, and real resilience.

Each episode helps you:
• Steady your mind under pressure
• Build calm strength in the middle of chaos
• Think clearly when stress hits hard
• Develop resilience that actually holds up in real life

You’ll hear solo episodes and conversations with people who’ve lived it—ranchers, parents, educators, first responders, and experts who understand rural life without the fluff or jargon.

At the core of the show is the Rhino Resilience philosophy:
• Tough with an unbreakable will
• Calm and steady
• Adaptive and wise
• Quietly powerful

Because real resilience isn’t about “bouncing back.”
It’s about learning how to carry the weight differently.

If you’re ready to build strength that lasts—mentally, emotionally, and in everyday life—this podcast is for you.

Stay steady… we’re in this together!

  • Ep 20: The Pop Bottle: How to Handle Anger Before It Handles You
    2026/10/07

Anger is normal. But when stress, frustration, and pressure keep building, sometimes it doesn’t take much to finally set us off.

Think about a bottle of pop that’s been shaken. The pressure builds inside, and if you open it immediately, you’re probably going to have a mess on your hands. We aren’t all that different.

In this episode of The Rhino Resilience Podcast, Chris “Rhino” Swenson introduces The Pop Bottle, a simple Thinking Tool for recognizing when pressure is building and learning how to respond before anger takes the controls.

We’ll talk about recognizing your warning signs, lowering the pressure before responding, taking a break without avoiding the problem, repairing things when you don’t handle a moment well, and remembering that you may not be the only shaken bottle in the room.

Because sometimes the person standing in front of you when you finally lose your temper wasn’t responsible for most of the shaking. They were simply there when you opened the bottle.

And there’s an even bigger question worth considering:

What happens to the bottles around you when you walk into the room?

Our kids, grandkids, coworkers, and the people around us are watching how we handle pressure. The legacy isn’t perfection. It’s demonstrating what responsible strength looks like.

Watch your fizz. Manage the pressure. Bring steadiness.

  • Ep 19: Change Your Perspective: What You See May Not Be the Whole Picture
    2026/09/30

Change Your Perspective: What You See May Not Be the Whole Picture

Have you ever been completely convinced you understood a situation—only to come back later and realize there was more to the story?

What we pay attention to and the perspective we bring into a situation can shape what we notice, what we miss, and even the options we believe are available to us.

In this episode of The Rhino Resilience Podcast, Chris Swenson explores how our brains filter an overwhelming amount of information, why we tend to find more of what we repeatedly teach our brains to look for, and how our current state of mind can color the way we interpret what is happening around us.

Using simple, memorable examples—including a quick attention experiment, the way social-media algorithms learn what gets our attention, and the idea of the “glasses” we're wearing—Chris introduces a practical reminder for moments when you feel stuck:

    Change your perspective. Look again.

    You'll explore:

    • Why your brain has to filter what gets your attention
    • How repeated attention can influence what you continue to notice
    • How your “glasses” can affect the meaning you give a situation
    • Why changing perspective can reveal options you couldn't see before
    • How past experiences can shape the lenses you carry into today
    • Why remembering that other people are wearing their own glasses can change difficult conversations

Changing your perspective doesn't mean pretending a problem isn't real or putting on rose-colored glasses.

    Sometimes it simply means recognizing:

What I'm seeing may be real—but it may not be the whole picture.

You may not be able to change what's happening around you. But sometimes changing how you look at it allows you to see choices, resources, people, possibilities, and paths forward that were there all along.

  • Ep 18 - Why We Keep Getting Stuck in the Same Place: The Tractor Rut Every One of Us Falls Into
    2026/07/29

Most of us have experienced it.

We tell ourselves we're going to respond differently next time... and then we don't.

We get frustrated, withdraw, overwork, worry, lose our patience, or fall into the same old patterns again. It can leave us wondering, "Why do I keep ending up in the same place?"

In this episode of the Rhino Resilience Podcast, Chris "Rhino" Swenson uses a simple rural analogy—the tractor rut—to explain why our brains naturally create automatic patterns and why stress often pushes us back into familiar reactions.

The good news? You're not broken, and you're not stuck forever.

    You'll learn:

    • Why your brain creates "autopilot"
    • Why stress makes old reactions feel automatic
    • How small, intentional choices can train healthier responses
    • Why resilience isn't about trying harder—it's about creating more than one way forward

Whether you're a farmer, rancher, first responder, teacher, parent, business owner, or simply someone trying to navigate life's challenges, this episode will help you better understand yourself and remind you that new paths are always possible.

You already know how to push through. This episode is about learning how to carry life differently.
