Add in massive head trauma and possibly a long case of untreated syphilis and now you have a Man Beast on your hands. Gilles was born in France, fought in the 100 years war and even fought alongside Joan of Arc. The original Bluebeard was a wealthy, successful warrior who had a taste for torturing and murdering kids. Eventually Gilles was caught and confessed under threat of torture. Old people, sometimes they can live a long time but that didn't quite fit Amy's business model.
