Anna Bowles and Viktoria Belim-Frolova in Kramatorsk, Eastern UkraineBY MICHAEL ANDERSENMy guests today are Anna Bowles, a British writer, and Viktoria Belim-Frolova, a Ukrainian-American writer. Both have spent months helping with the dangerous evacuation work in the city of Kramatorsk in Eastern Ukraine, just 13 kilometres from the front line and well within range of Russian glide bombs and drones. And they are not impressed with the work being done there by the international aid organisations - or rather not done, their limited presence.“It is absolutely terrible that the big international aid agencies who get so much of the donation money do almost nothing in Kramatorsk.”Every day people are killed in Kramatorsk. Last week, a Russian glide bomb killed 33 people at a bus stop. The city once had a population of around 200,000 - now fewer than 30,000 are left.“Strangely enough, this place seems to have been forgotten both by most international media - and, worse, also by the big international aid organisations,” Anna says.“I have not seen any signs of the international aid agencies being involved in evacuations in Kramatorsk,” Viktoria testifies.“They are visible in Kyiv and Lviv,” Anna adds with brutal British humour, “there are a lot of their expensive land cruisers parked outside restaurants in Kyiv and Lviv…”“Nobody out here in Kramatorsk has any time for the aid agencies, unfortunately.”Listen to the two tell me in detail about the evacuation work and about why they are so disappointed with the international aid agencies. If you appreciate my work, please considerBECOMING A PAID SUBSCRIBER - it’ll help us keep producing this stuff. If you want to read and support the work that Anna and Viktoria do in Kramatorsk, or support local aid organisations, you can find the relevant links on Anna’s Substack page and Viktoria’s Substack page. You can also listen to this podcast on Spotify, on Apple, on Podimo, and Youtube. Here is the interview we did with Anna Bowles a few weeks ago.And - you can also read this profile interview we did with Anna a year ago.A note: We are beginning the transition to a soft paywall.
