I have admittedly avoided diligent study of the book of The Revelation. It is the divergent opinions among theologians I respect about its contents that have developed my hesitation. I have studied the theories extensively now, and I would recommend a literal interpretation of this book, as we would do with the rest of Scripture. There are symbols that are unclear in The Revelation, and there are certainly mysteries. However, I believe John, as inspired by the Holy Spirit, gives us valuable, literal truth in this last book of the New Testament.

    Some History

The youngest of the Apostles, John, is exiled to Patmos – an island that might have been otherwise uninhabited. We don’t know much about the end of his life, but we think he might have returned to Ephesus. John apparently died around AD 100 in Ephesus, we believe.

This is the same John who wrote the Gospel According to John and the three epistles in his name. John’s writing gives us a clear view that God and Jesus are of the same substance. We see that Jesus is eternal and that He is creator, redeemer, and fully God.

    Prophecy Regarding the Future

We struggle to grasp prophecy about the future. John explains, in relatively direct terms, a series of events that will unfold. It is the timing of this unfolding that has become the subject of much speculation and debate. I’m reminded of Paul’s instructions to look forward rather than back, to look at what lies ahead. So, this study will be most valuable in our efforts to live the Christian life well.

We can see God’s faithfulness from the beginning of the world in Genesis through the end of Revelation. The God who created the world out of nothing is the God who will fulfill all the prophecies in Scripture. This God is our God. He is unchanging and able to do what He says He will do. The book of Revelation applies prophetic truth to our lives today. This is a beautiful, helpful book of the Bible that informs the way we live today!

We wrapped up our survey of Paul’s epistle to the Ephesians last week, and next week we begin our detailed study of the Revelation. This week, I discuss our economy and the current warning signs that should concern us. Thankfully, we trust God and can rest in and rely on Him. It is important that we remain vigilant and prepared, and this discussion is intended to provide a helpful perspective to that end.

    U.S. National Debt and GDP

I discuss the national debt, GDP, and the historical and current relationship between them. Today’s discussion also includes Social Security and its forecast inability to meet its obligations in about eight years.

U.S. Economic Posture with Other Countries

Our economic posture with other countries is the final economic topic I address in this episode. The parallels to the 1920s are concerning, but we know that God is faithful and His steadfast love endures forever. Our Christian worldview gives us confidence in Scripture and its rich, comforting promises.
