  • S3 | E7 Don't Accidentally Become a Heretic: Hermeneutics 101
    2026/02/09
    In this episode, we talk about why learning to study the Bible faithfully is not optional for the Christian. Scripture is not only a gift, but it is also a command. We are called to read God’s Word and to rightly handle the Word of Truth, carefully distinguishing truth from error. This means we are not only guarding against false teaching from the outside, but also guarding our own hearts and minds from the danger of misinterpreting Scripture. We do not listen to heretics, so we ought not accidentally become one ourselves. The principles we share in this episode are just the beginning of learning how to guard against such error and handle God’s Word with care and faithfulness.We discuss several common ways the Bible is misunderstood today: ignoring what the text meant to its original audience, reading our own meaning into Scripture, approaching the Bible through emotionalism or overspiritualization, and drawing principles from passages that were never intended to teach them. In a culture that often asks, “What does this text mean to me?”, we are reminded that there is only one true meaning to any particular Scripture passage - the meaning the author intended when the text was written. There is one meaning, there may be several sound principles that can be drawn from a passage, and there are many ways those principles can be faithfully applied in different situations.Many assume careful Bible study is only for pastors or scholars, but God has given His Word to all believers. Just as we educate our children to read, analyze, and understand various types of literature, world history, and the English language, we must not neglect the most important task which is teaching ourselves and our families how to faithfully read, understand, and apply the Scriptures.Listen to our previous podcast series on The Spiritual Disciplines including the first episode on Bible Reading and Prayer >> https://reformedfaithandfamily.com/growing-in-the-spiritual-disciplines-a-podcast-series/Books Mentioned in This Episode Can Be Found in Our Recommended Resources Section on Spiritual Growth:Grasping God's Word by Duvall and HaysFind this and other Bible Study Tools on our Spiritual Growth Recommended Resources page: https://reformedfaithandfamily.com/recommended-resources/spiritual-growth-resources/Products Mentioned In This Episode:Gray Toad Tallow: Use Coupon Code RFF20 for 20% off your first order.Keep Up with Reformed Faith and Family in the Following Ways:Never miss an episode, article, or a new FREEBIE by joining our weekly newsletter here: https://reformedfaithandfamily.com/subscribe/Build your library with our recommended resources: https://reformedfaithandfamily.com/recommended-resources/Read the latest articles: https://reformedfaithandfamily.com/blog/Download your FREEBIES in our store: https://reformedfaithandfamily.com/educational-resources-store/Check out the Gift Shop: https://reformedfaithandfamily.com/gift-shop/Good Dog Bible Rebinds: https://reformedfaithandfamily.com/good-dog-designs-and-rebinds/WE HAVE A FAVOR TO ASK! • S3 | E6 Progress Over Perfection: Cultivating Spiritual & Personal Discipline
    2026/01/14
    In this episode, we define discipline biblically and practically. Christian discipline is not about perfectionism or self-improvement. It is about ordered obedience, self-control, and steady faithfulness over time.We outline the core spiritual disciplines taught in Scripture: prayer and Bible reading, meditation and memorization, corporate, family, and personal worship, fasting, stewardship, evangelism, service, silence, solitude, learning, and journaling. We also address why these practices matter, how they shape Christian maturity, and how they are meant to function in daily life and in the home.We then apply these principles to personal disciplines like physical health. We discuss how to set clear goals, understand your motivation, work within your personality and season, and monitor progress without adopting an all-or-nothing mentality.This episode is a practical framework for Christians who want structure, clarity, and consistency without confusing discipline with legalism or growth with perfection.Listen to our previous podcast series on The Spiritual Disciplines >> https://reformedfaithandfamily.com/growing-in-the-spiritual-disciplines-a-podcast-series/Books Mentioned In This Episode:60 Scriptures You Can PraySpiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life by Donald S. • S3 | E5 Does your Nativity Scene Violate the Second Commandment?
    2025/12/22

    Did you grow up learning about Bible stories through Sunday school felt boards while holding your storybook picture Bible? Does your grandmother have a picture of blonde-haired, blue-eyed Jesus hanging in her home? Have you watched Mel Gibson's The Passion or Dallas Jenkins' The Chosen and felt as if it helped you to better connect with Jesus' humanity?

    In this episode, we dive deep into the scope of the Second Commandment - "You shall not make for yourself an idol" - exploring both what Scripture has to say and how it was viewed historically. From Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 4, we unpack God's prohibition against fashioning representations of Himself, including the two-fold command against making and worshiping them. We trace the regulative principle of worship through church history: from early Christian symbols to the Roman Catholic veneration of images, the Reformers' ban under Calvin and the Puritans, and its modern relaxation.

    Drawing on the golden calf in Exodus 32, we see how "good" intentions don't excuse transgression, as God declares His jealousy and promises blessings for obedience (Exodus 20:5-6). God's holiness (Leviticus 19:2) and invisibility (Romans 1:20; Colossians 1:15) demand faith in the unseen (Hebrews 11:1), not visual aids.

    We address common concerns: intentions of the heart, classical art, teaching children about Jesus, and more, all while affirming the Westminster Larger Catechism's clear stance against any depiction of the Godhead. Whether you're Reformed or curious, join us for a Scripture-saturated discussion on worshiping God as He commands, especially in the season celebrating the Incarnation.

  • S3 | E4 Miscarriage and Ministry: Weep With Those Who Weep
    2025/11/19

    Six weeks ago we experienced our third miscarriage. Losing a child, at any stage, is a profound tragedy, yet Christians alone have a hope and a comfort that the world cannot offer.

    Scripture tells us suffering is guaranteed in this broken world, but we are often unprepared when it comes. Much of the unnecessary despair comes from misunderstanding the curse that rests on creation and from forgetting the sovereign goodness of the God who rules over every detail of our pain.

    In this episode we share our recent story openly: what happened, how we have been walking through the grief, and the biblical truths that are sustaining us. We also spend time giving pastoral counsel both to believers who are suffering and to those who want to know how to minister faithfully to the hurting.

    Our prayer is that this conversation will strengthen grieving parents and equip the church to weep with those who weep, to comfort others with the comfort we ourselves have received from God (2 Cor 1:4).

  • S3 | E3 Headcovering: Cultural Relic, Biblical Command, Or A Christian Liberty? {Part 2}
    2025/07/30

    In this second installment on the often-ignored topic of Christian headcovering, we move beyond the biblical mandate to examine how Church History consistently affirmed the practice and how the feminist movement worked strategically to dismantle it.

    For nearly two millennia, headcovering was universally practiced by faithful women across Christian denominations nearly without exception. But by the mid-20th century, it had all but vanished from the Western church. What changed? Was it new theological insight or cultural compromise?

    Join us as we explore how second-wave feminism targeted headcovering as a threat to its ideological goals, how pastors yielded to cultural pressure, and why recovering this symbol is about far more than fabric. This is not about going backward. It’s about returning to the timeless beauty of God’s design for worship, authority, and glory.

  • S3 | E2 Headcovering: Cultural Relic, Biblical Command, Or A Christian Liberty? {Part 1}
    2025/07/14
    In this first part of a two-part series, we take a deep dive into 1 Corinthians 11:2–16 to explore what Scripture actually says about headcovering. Is headcovering a cultural relic, a command for today, or an optional Christian liberty?Just the mention of headcovering for Christian women can stir up confusion, discomfort, or outright dismissal. What was once a universal symbol of biblical womanhood in the Church has all but vanished from modern worship. Why? And what does Scripture really say?We’ll examine Paul’s reasoning—rooted not in first-century customs but in the created order before the Fall. Whether you’re skeptical, curious, or convicted, this conversation invites you to take Scripture seriously, even when it pushes against modern norms.CLICK HERE to read the corresponding article to this episode and to get additional recommended reading and listening to explore this topic further.Recommended Resources for Further Study:Michael Barrett’s Head Covering for Public WorshipMichael Barrett’s Sermon Series on HeadcoveringBnonn Tennant on Head CoveringsHistory of Quotes on Headcovering Since the ReformationHead Covering: A Forgotten Christian Practice for Modern Times by Jeremy GardinerR.C. • S3|E1: Is Empathy a Christian Virtue?
    2025/06/30

    Empathy is often exalted as the chief virtue in our present age—but has our pursuit of emotional validation clouded our discernment of God’s unchanging truth? In this episode of the Reformed Faith and Family Podcast, we delve into the rise of empathy in modern thinking and weigh it against the eternal virtues upheld in Scripture—compassion, mercy, and truth.

    Though empathy may reflect a heartfelt desire to understand another’s suffering, it can, when left unchecked, blur moral limits and elevate emotional alignment above the call to Christlikeness. When emotional resonance takes precedence over the Word of God, the line between love and compromise becomes perilously thin.

    How then should Christians respond? Join us as we seek the wisdom of Scripture to discern what it truly means to love our neighbor—not merely by sharing in their emotions, but by guiding them toward the healing, hope, and holiness found in Christ alone.
