I started this podcast in 2022. It took me a while, but I’m excited to get to the 20th episode!

On episode 18 of Red Lens Podcast, I sat down for a conversation with Jenny Toomey, Kristin Thomson, Derek Denckla, and Pat Graham. Many years ago we were all involved with Simple Machines Records. We did this interview while we were all in DC for the Positive Force DC 40th Anniversary activities in June. Because I recorded it on inferior equipment, the sound quality isn’t as good as usual. And due to time constraints the interview is shorter than previous Red Lens podcasts. Nevertheless, I think we covered some interesting ground.

We talk about the recent box-set that Numero Records released of Jenny & Kristin’s band Tsunami, and their other recent efforts to better document the DIY punk and post-punk music scene. A lot of music from the 1990s has fallen into obscurity with vinyl, CD and cassette releases long out of print & because those bands and labels often closed up shop before digital file sharing or streaming services hit the scene.

In the interview we talk about Simple Machines, Tsunami, the politically-tinged DC punk scene that birthed those things, and why it’s valuable to document and bring back to life some of the bands and records from the 1990s DIY music scene.
