I started this podcast in 2022. It took me a while, but I’m excited to get to the 20th episode!

On episode 20 of Red Lens Podcast, I sat down for a conversation with Minnesota activist and amazing movement photographer Ashley Taylor-Gougé. We talked about Ashley’s work as a movement photographer, when she got into photography, where the name ‘Watch Me Rise’ came from, and much more!

The intro/outro song in this episode is ‘Zapatista garage punk instrumental’ by Joshua Hudes. You can find it at https://pixabay.com/music/rock-zapatista-garage-punk-instrumental-instrumental-201262/

Jim is a long-time Washington DC-based photographer and videographer. His photos of 1980s DC punk bands are iconic, including widely-recognizable images of seminal bands like Fugazi and Minor Threat. We talk about his book that brings together so many of his iconic DC punk band photos, In My Eyes: Photographs 1982-1997. We talk about some of his amazing experiences, like for example photographing Fugazi playing in a jail! We also talk about the politics of his photography including his years working as a photographer for the Teamsters union, where he documented union struggles and strikes around the country. You can also hear about his photography work in the 1990s in Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, and Egypt, his video work on two powerful documentary films with Scott Crawford: Salad Days (2014) and Creem: America’s Only Rock’n’Roll Magazine (2019), and much more. __________

On episode 18 of Red Lens Podcast, I sat down for a conversation with Jenny Toomey, Kristin Thomson, Derek Denckla, and Pat Graham. Many years ago we were all involved with Simple Machines Records. We did this interview while we were all in DC for the Positive Force DC 40th Anniversary activities in June. Because I recorded it on inferior equipment, the sound quality isn’t as good as usual. And due to time constraints the interview is shorter than previous Red Lens podcasts. Nevertheless, I think we covered some interesting ground.

We talk about the recent box-set that Numero Records released of Jenny & Kristin’s band Tsunami, and their other recent efforts to better document the DIY punk and post-punk music scene. A lot of music from the 1990s has fallen into obscurity with vinyl, CD and cassette releases long out of print & because those bands and labels often closed up shop before digital file sharing or streaming services hit the scene.

In the interview we talk about Simple Machines, Tsunami, the politically-tinged DC punk scene that birthed those things, and why it’s valuable to document and bring back to life some of the bands and records from the 1990s DIY music scene.

Some things mentioned in the episode:

    Simple Machines Records

    Tsunami

    Positive Force DC

    Future of Music Coalition

    Numero Records

Tsunami box set on Numero Records
