In the story of the Prodigal Son, God is described as a father who allows freedom and encourages good behavior by values and personal choice. The father didn't tightly control the younger son, he didn't tightly control the older son, and certainly didn't control nature - the famine that swept the land. But through it all, God is a loving, present Father leading us forward in love, restoration, and hope.
