They also get into immigration and the different ways people can be perceived based on race, appearance, language, and where others assume they come from. The discussion questions why some immigrants seem to face more scrutiny than others—and why businesses that rely on immigrant labor often remain part of everyday American life. The conversation then turns to incarceration, punishment, and whether people who are quick to say “lock them up” really understand what life inside segregation or solitary confinement can be like.
