“Beyond the Thriller: When Fiction Meets the Reality of Human Trafficking”

An RJEC Project Red Cord Chronicles conversation with Carla Damron, author of The Orchid Tattoo

“What can a fictional story teach us about the real-world conditions that allow trafficking to happen—and what can communities do about it?”

Carla Damron writes fiction on a mission. A social worker, advocate, and author, Damron uses her writing to put a human face on issues like drug abuse, mental illness, and human trafficking. Like Carla, her characters—flawed, human, and capable—believe they can do good in the world. Damron’s seven novels have won multiple literary awards, including the Women’s Fiction Writers Association Star Award for Best Novel and the NIEA award for best suspense. Damron holds an MSW from USC and an MFA in Creative Writing from Queens University. She teaches part-time with Writers.com and enjoys volunteer work in her community. She lives in Columbia, South Carolina with her husband and their family of entitled rescue animals.
