    Prayer: The Struggle Is Real
    1 Kings 17:12-15 When Elijah met the widow of Zarephath gathering sticks by the well, he asked her for water — then for bread. She had nothing left but a handful of flour and a little oil, enough for one last meal before she and her son expected to die. Elijah told her to feed him first, and only then herself and her son. She obeyed, and the flour and oil never ran out. This story captures a tension every believer knows: staying obedient to what God has called us to do, even when it looks selfish, harsh, or strange to the world. Elijah didn't ease the widow's fear before asking her to trust — he asked her to act in faith first. And the widow's struggle was just as real: choosing to feed a stranger before her own child felt like the opposite of being a good mother, yet it was an act of faith that God honored. This devotional sits with that discomfort — the moments when following God's mission puts us at odds with how the world (or even our own instincts) says a "good" person should act. It's a reminder that staying focused on what God has spoken over us, even when we can't explain it to others, is where the miracle happens. In His time, God doesn't just keep His promise — He vindicates those who stayed faithful when it didn't make sense.     In Prayer: Staying Focused is Harder Than You Think, Part Two, we continue with Proverbs 4:25–26 and look at one of the hardest distractions we face—not our enemies, but the people we love. Our spouses, children, parents, family members, and closest friends may love God and genuinely want the best for us, yet they can unintentionally become a “poison pill” that delays or distracts us from the mission and vision God has given us. Jesus teaches us that our commitment to Him must come before every earthly relationship, not because we should stop loving our families, but because nothing can be allowed to take God’s place or pull us away from His calling. That is what makes staying focused so difficult: when the people we love need us, guilt, worry, shame, and responsibility can make us feel as though we are abandoning them when we continue doing what God told us to do. But Proverbs reminds us to keep looking straight ahead, carefully mark out the path before us, and remain focused. Sometimes obedience means loving the people around us while still refusing to come down from the work God has called us to complete, because there is a promise waiting on the other side of our obedience.

    Prayer: Staying Focused is Harder Than You Think is a morning devotional founded on Proverbs 4:25–27, which instructs us to look straight ahead, fix our eyes on what lies before us, and stay on the path God has marked out. What I have come to realize is that the closer we get to completing a divine mission or vision, the harder it can become to remain focused. In Nehemiah 6, Nehemiah’s enemies repeatedly tried to pull him away from rebuilding the wall, but he recognized that every moment spent away from the work was a moment lost from the assignment God had given him. Yet distractions do not always come from obvious enemies. Sometimes they come through people we love—family, friends, and even well-meaning believers who require our attention or encourage us to move in a direction contrary to what God personally instructed us to do. 1 Kings 13 reminds us how dangerous it can be to abandon God’s direct instruction simply because another person claims to have a different word for us. The lesson is simple but challenging: staying focused on what God has called you to do is much harder than it appears. We must learn to recognize both the distractions from outside and the distractions from within, guard our time, remain obedient, and keep our eyes fixed on the path God has placed before us.
