概要
Queen for Two Years, Then Erased: The Case of Helen of Bosnia
In this episode we present the surviving records and the burial that reintroduced Helen - born Gruba - to history, tracing the political pressures she faced and the material clues that mark her disappearance. What choices and constraints shaped a reign that lasted only two and a half years?
Person: Helen (born Gruba)
Period: 1396-1399 (reign circa)
Event: Ottoman incursion into Bosnia, January 1398
Location: Vesela Straža / Bugojno region (burial discovery)
Document: Ragusa letter dated 18 March 1399
- Helen came from the Nikolić family, a noble house within the sphere of the powerful Kosača.
- After King Dabiša’s death she was recognized as sovereign and issued charters while Ragusa paid tribute to her in April 1398.
- In January 1398 an Ottoman army, the largest yet in the Balkans, entered Bosnia and turned back due to deep winter snow rather than a military defeat.
- Contemporary records show her as queen until March 1399, after which the documentary trail falls silent for over six centuries.
- In modern times a construction crew near Vesela Straža uncovered a ruined church and twelve unmarked burials, one identified as the woman who had signed as Queen of Bosnia.
