  • “Just Like That... It Was No Longer About the Merits of the Bill” — Rep. Steve Bishop on Optics Over Substance in Augusta
    2025/08/02

    Send us a text

In this episode of Q-Point Podcast, Rep. Steve Bishop returns to share what he’s learned after his first year in the Maine Legislature—and the surprises that came with it. Bishop dives into a candid conversation about how often optics overshadow real solutions at the State House, including LD 717, a bill designed to stop municipalities (and taxpayers) from paying drug testing fees—a bill that originated from a discussion in our studio between Sheriff Troy Morton and Rep. Bishop before bringing it to Augusta. What began with bipartisan support turned into a party-line fight driven by optics, not outcomes.

He also discusses the realities of Augusta politics, from last-minute budget maneuvers and lobbyist influence to why reading every bill is nearly impossible. Bishop shares bipartisan wins on dam infrastructure, what a typical day looks like for a legislator, and why Maine needs more people motivated by community—not party—to step up and serve.

🎧 Now airing on VOM – The Voice of Maine (101.3 FM | 103.9 FM | VOM App) and available after broadcast on QPointPodcast.com, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, iHeartRadio, or wherever you listen to podcasts.
