This morning I woke up on a piece of land that belongs to me. It also belongs to you, and to a few hundred million other people, which is a strange kind of ownership but a real one. I was parked on a national forest road in the Cascades, a few miles up a gravel track, nobody around. I made coffee and watched the light come up through the trees. I didn't pay anyone for the privilege, and nobody could tell me to leave. I've woken up like that thousands of mornings now, and it took me an embarrassingly long time to understand what actually makes it possible. It isn't the van. The van is just the tool. I'm not a wealthy man. I don't own a piece of the mountains — no cabin, no forty acres, none of the things that let people with money have the outdoors whenever they want it. What I have is the same thing you have, whether you've thought about it or not. Without it, being outside would be a rich person's hobby. This is about the first public land I ever loved without knowing what it was, a stretch of public river that quietly stopped being reachable when one corner of a ranch got posted, and why the crowds that annoy me are also the thing protecting these places from something worse. A billionaire and I have exactly the same right to that trail. There aren't many things left like that.
