  • Equity, Technology, and the Future of Psychosocial Safety with Bala Muthiah
    2026/10/13

Episode 179 of the Psychosocial Safety USA Podcast takes listeners into one of the most consequential intersections of our time: technology, equity, and human safety.

Dr. I. David Daniels sits down with tech leader Bala Muthiah for a conversation that challenges long-held assumptions about innovation, leadership, and the human experience inside modern workplaces.

Bala argues that technology—often criticized for widening gaps—may actually be the most powerful equity tool humans have ever created, if leaders choose to use it that way. He illustrates how access, open systems, and intentional design can transform entire communities, from India’s UPI payment revolution to the life-saving decision to open-source the modern seatbelt. But the episode doesn’t stop at optimism.

Together, Bala and Dr. Daniels confront the uncomfortable truth: Technology can accelerate harm just as quickly as it accelerates progress. Profit-driven cultures, exclusionary leadership, and outdated playbooks can turn digital systems into psychosocial hazards—creating fear, inequity, and environments where people cannot safely contribute.

Listeners will hear provocative insights on:

    • Why equity cannot be bottom-up—it must start with leadership

    • How curiosity (even a sticky note moved around a monitor) can prevent leaders from drifting into inequitable habits

    • Why psychosocial safety is inseparable from innovation, because exclusion and fear aren’t cultural issues—they’re hazards

    • How rapidly changing technology demands that organizations rewrite their leadership and equity playbooks every year, not every decade

    • Why people only contribute their best when they feel safe, valued, and included

Episode 179 is a call to action for leaders, technologists, and anyone shaping the future of work. It reframes equity not as a moral accessory, but as a core requirement for human-centered innovation—and a non-negotiable pillar of psychosocial safety.

This conversation will leave listeners rethinking what technology is for, who it should serve, and what leadership must look like in a world where the cost of leaving people behind is now too high to ignore.

  • Compliance As A Tool for Psychosocial Safety with Jennifer Newton
    2026/09/29

Episode 178 of the Psychosocial Safety USA Podcast features an insightful conversation with Jennifer Newton, attorney, governance, risk, and compliance professional, and founder of the National Association of Black Compliance and Risk Professionals.

We explore how governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) are not just technical functions but also powerful psychosocial safety tools that shape people’s experiences of power, accountability, and fairness at work. Jennifer discusses how psychosocial hazards emerge when organizations prioritize systems over people, tolerate harmful behaviors, or ignore the cultural conditions that influence compliance. She shares her journey from public-interest law to regulatory compliance and explains why people—not policies—ultimately determine organizational integrity.

We also highlight the importance of community, representation, and data through NAFRAM’s work to support Black GRC professionals. This episode underscores a core truth: psychosocial safety is foundational to organizational success.

  • Bridging Workplace Language and Culture with Rony Jabour
    2026/09/15

In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, our guest is Rony Jabour, Founder & CEO of United Safety Net, a leading safety training and consulting organization serving the construction industry across the United States. Rony brings a deeply personal and profoundly human perspective to the safety profession, one shaped not by textbooks or certifications, but by lived experience, loss, and purpose.

Rony shares the story of losing his father at six years old to a preventable workplace accident in the Amazon forest. That moment — the instant he “became the man of the house” — shaped his life’s mission: ensuring no family endures what his family endured. After immigrating to the United States and working in construction, he witnessed unsafe conditions firsthand. An OSHA visit changed his trajectory, leading him to become a translator, then a trainer, and ultimately a national voice for culturally competent safety education.

Throughout the episode, we explore the intersection of language, culture, and psychosocial safety. Rony explains why many organizations misdiagnose their challenges as “language problems” when they are actually culture problems — differences in communication norms, authority dynamics, educational backgrounds, and lived experiences. Silence in a training room doesn’t mean understanding; it often means fear, shame, or cultural conditioning.

We also discuss how psychosocial hazards show up long before physical ones: workers distracted by family crises, immigrants carrying the weight of two countries, and supervisors unaware of how tone, customs, or assumptions create risk.

Rony’s message is clear: safety is human. It requires humility, curiosity, trust, and cultural awareness. And above all, every worker, regardless of language, background, or birthplace, deserves to go home safely every single day.
