Most people spend their lives chasing happiness through family, friendships, and work, only to find those things still leave them feeling empty. Harvard researcher Arthur Brooks identifies four pillars of human happiness: faith, family, friendship, and work. Psalm 80, written during the destruction of the northern tribes of Israel, shows what happens when each of those pillars is pursued apart from God. Family bonds crumbled, friendships became toxic, and meaningful work turned fruitless, all because faith had been removed from the foundation. Jesus directly addresses each of these broken pillars in the Gospel of John, offering a new family, true friendship, and fruitful work to all who abide in Him. The lesson is not that family, friendship, and work are bad. The problem is treating them as the source of meaning rather than the fruit of a life rooted in God. When faith comes first, the other pillars can stand. When it is removed, they eventually collapse under a weight they were never designed to carry.
