Are prop firms really too good to be true, and what actually happens when a trader gets denied a payout?
In this episode of The Weekly Edge, Alex Seery and Bill Betts take a closer look at prop firms, the rules traders need to understand, and some of the common reasons people run into problems.
Alex explains why he believes prop firms can offer a lower-risk route into trading compared with putting large amounts of personal capital into a brokerage account, but also why reading the rules is absolutely essential.
They discuss the differences between challenge and funded stages, drawdown limits, consistency rules, news trading restrictions, payout schedules and some of the other details that can easily catch newer traders out.
Alex also shares his own experience of having payouts denied after breaking prop firm rules. Rather than hiding the mistakes, he explains exactly what happened, what the firms told him and what he changed afterwards.
The conversation also looks at why social media complaints do not always tell the full story, why some traders genuinely do get paid, and why accountability matters when rules have been broken.
Bill and Alex also talk through what they look for when choosing a prop firm, why different account types can have very different conditions, and why the cheapest or fastest option is not always the best one.
Ultimately, prop firms can be a useful route into funded trading, but they are not a shortcut. Understanding the rules, managing risk and developing the skill to trade consistently still come first.
No hype.
No noise.
No unrealistic promises.
Just real conversations about trading.
