She founded and runs Dongbaek Small School, an alternative boarding school in Jeju. After working for nearly 20 years as a teacher and head teacher at Gandhi School, where she experienced the philosophy of alternative education and community life, she established a school in Jeju to create a smaller learning community. Dongbaek Small School values learning that helps students live as themselves, care for one another, and stay connected with the world, rather than focusing on exams, rankings, or standardized textbooks. Through boarding life, self-governing meetings, project-based classes, and activities connected to Jeju’s villages and nature, students learn democracy, peace, ecology, and human rights in everyday life. She hopes the school will continue as a small educational community where every student’s voice is heard and each person can grow as their true self.
