Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.
The bright-eyed and sharp-tongued Elizabeth Bennet lives with her parents and her four sisters in an estate called Longbourn. The family isn’t rich, and there are no sons, so Mrs. Bennet is intent on getting her daughters married off to the best suitors possible as soon as possible. When Mr. Bingley moves into town with his friend, the wealthy Mr. Darcy, in tow, Mrs. Bennet exults. Unfortunately, things don’t go off quite as she hopes. Mr. Darcy is proud. Elizabeth dislikes him, preferring to associate with the charming young officer, Mr. Wickham. Jane (the eldest sister) falls in love with Bingley, but the two are torn apart. After a volume of misadventures and misplaced proposals, Elizabeth meets Darcy again on his estate, Pemberley. She realizes she has misjudged him. But Wickham has turned out to be a philanderer, seducing and eloping with her youngest sister, Lydia. All hope seems lost for the family’s reputation until Darcy comes to the rescue, restoring Lydia’s honor. Jane and Bingley are reunited. Elizabeth and Darcy, now equal in love, become engaged.
