In this episode of the Tranzcendent Outlook Podcast, I sit down with Joe Rodriguez, President of Puerto Ricans United, Inc. (PRU) in New Haven, Connecticut, for an inspiring conversation about community, culture, leadership, and the importance of knowing where you come from.Born and raised in New Haven, Joe’s journey into community activism began at just 16 years old, when a knock on his door from Kevin Diaz opened the door to a lifetime of service. Joe reflects on the people and experiences that helped shape him along the way, including the important role his mother played in encouraging him, keeping him grounded, and motivating him to continue pursuing his dreams.Over the years, Joe developed a reputation for his strong organizational skills and commitment to the community. Those qualities eventually led him, alongside fellow community leaders, to help revive the Puerto Rican Festival in New Haven. This year marks 10 years of the festival under the leadership of Puerto Ricans United, Inc. — a milestone that represents not only celebration, but perseverance, collaboration, and cultural pride.Joe also shares his excitement about the return of the Puerto Rican Cultural Pageant, discusses the work PRU has accomplished throughout the community, and expresses his gratitude for everyone who has helped make that work possible.Looking toward the future, Joe and the PRU Executive Board have big plans: continuing to grow the festival, giving back to the community, establishing a permanent home for the organization, and placing a greater emphasis on educating the Puerto Rican community about its history and culture, as well as current events impacting the island of Puerto Rico. And, of course, no conversation with Joe would be complete without talking about salsa! Joe shares his love for the genre and reveals his go-to artists when he's on a long drive. This is a conversation about community, culture, family, leadership, perseverance, and the responsibility we have to preserve and pass our heritage on to the next generation. If you enjoyed this episode, LIKE, COMMENT, SUBSCRIBE, and SHARE the Tranzcendent Outlook Podcast with someone who would appreciate Joe’s story and the work being done by Puerto Ricans United, Inc.Join the conversation:What does preserving Puerto Rican culture and community mean to you?Follow Eddie Tranzcendent:Website - https://tranzcendentoutlook.com/Facebook Profile: https://www.facebook.com/eddie.t.martinez/Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/EddieTranzcendent/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/eddie_tranzcendent/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@eddie_tranzcendentLinked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/eddie-tranzcendent-martinez-1839b0170/X: @Eddie_TranzJoe Rodriguez:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/joseph.rodriguez.79219Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jrod_203/Puerto Ricans United, INC.:Website: https://pruinc.org/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PuertoRicansUnitedIncInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/pruinc_nh/DONATE: https://pruinc.org/donate
