The Old Testament contains several prayers for God’s blessings, grace (favor), and protection. The Hebrew word for blessings means “barak.” One of the most significant prayers appears in Numbers 6:22-27, called the priestly blessing. This same blessing also appears in Psalm 67:1-2. In this priestly prayer, the living Sovereign LORD God spoke and said to His faithful servant Moses, with instructions to speak to his brother, Aaron, and his sons, on how they were to bless God’s people with the LORD’s special blessing. In the Old Testament, Aaron and his sons were priests from the tribe of Levi, and they prayed for the people to receive God’s special blessings, grace, and protection. First, Aaron and his sons prayed the LORD’s blessings on the people and their families, asking that the LORD’s safety hedge protect them from Satan’s harm and danger, and that He bless their land and labor with fertility and abundance. The living Sovereign LORD God is the King of the Universe, and He is the source of all spiritual blessings of good health, peace, grace, safety, and fertility through love with faithfulness and obedience to Him and His holy ways. Next, Aaron and his sons were to pray a prayer of blessings so that the LORD would shine His glorious face upon His people and be gracious to them with His love and mercy in every way. The holy Presence of the living LORD is like sunshine and a shield for those who humbly love and walk with Him by faith. Moreover, Aaron and his sons were to pray for the living Sovereign LORD God to lift His countenance (face) upon them with His approving favor and give them lasting peace (shalom), total well-being, and gladness from heaven to their hearts and their land. The Holy Bible warns of the dangers, troubles, and brokenness that happen when the LORD turns away His gracious face and favor from our lives because of obeying and following Satan’s evil, rebellious, and wicked living. Finally and most importantly, Aaron and his sons pray for the living LORD’s Name to be placed on the people and their families as their King so that He could send them His blessings from heaven. The priestly prayer emphasized the covenant Name Yahweh (the LORD). The Name LORD is also translated as Yahweh or Jehovah, and the LORD is the Almighty God, Most High God, and the living Holy Father of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob (Israel), and Christ Jesus our Savior. The Name of the LORD is an ever-present strong tower and reward against our enemies, and the righteous can run into that strong tower to find safety, strengthening, refuge, protection, and shelter in times of trouble and pain. The LORD’s abundant grace, mercy, and peace (shalom) come as His gift to everyone who loves and honors Him with faithful obedience and walks in all His goodness and does not live Satan’s evil and false lifestyle. The living LORD is our faithful Heavenly Father and Good Shepherd, who cares for and protects His faithful people, and He hears their humble and heartfelt prayers. Also, the Holy Bible encourages everyone to pray non-stop and continually to the living Sovereign LORD God with faith and thanksgiving for their daily needs, forgiveness of sins, healing of sickness, and protection from evil and harm for themselves and their families. Nestled in the Old Testament book of 1 Chronicles is Jabez's short prayer. Not much is known about Jabez other than the Holy Bible calling Jabez more honorable than his brothers and sisters. The name Jabez literally means “he will cause pain” because his mother gave birth to Jabez in pain as a curse. In his pain, Jabez cried out and called on the living Sovereign LORD God, who is the God of Israel, saying, “Oh that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil and harm so that I will be free from pain.” Jabez prayed that the living LORD would keep him safe and protected from Satan’s evil temptation and testing that causes harm, suffering, and pain. Satan and his evil workers, with unclean and dark spirits who prowl and roam the earth to hurt, harm, and destroy people with their lying ways, poisonous temptations, and selfish living. The living Sovereign LORD God heard Jabez’s heartfelt prayer and granted Jabez’s prayer request to bless him and enlarge his territory. Jabez’s small prayer teaches the importance of seeking with faith and dependence on the living Sovereign LORD God for ALL our daily needs, grace, forgiveness, and safety and protection from Satan’s evil and harm to ourselves and our families. The humble prayer of Jabez to the living LORD changed the course of his life, and the living LORD made Jabez’s life a blessing and no longer a curse with pain. The New Testament teaches that Christ Jesus is our Mediator and merciful High Priest of Heaven, and He is the source and pathway to His Holy Father’s blessings and peace from heaven.
