Self-criticism feels like it should motivate change, but the research says the opposite. In this episode, Rick and Greg cover a 2024 analysis linking self-criticism to disordered eating, and self-compassion to lower rates of it, then walk through what that looks like in real life: the shame spiral of "I ate three cookies, I've ruined everything," why cortisol from that kind of self-talk actually promotes fat storage, and how treating yourself the way you would treat a good friend who slipped up changes the outcome.
They also cover the flip side, kindness to others. Studies show volunteering and pro-social behavior in older adults are linked to lower inflammation, faster wound healing, and a 20 to 24 percent lower mortality risk, along with the oxytocin and endorphin boost that comes from being kind. They close with a caution on social media: constant exposure to weight loss and fitness content can drive body dysmorphia even in people who have made real progress, and a short break from it has been shown to improve body image.
