  • Ep. 129: Stop Blending In: Legal Marketing, GEO & CRM Strategy with Amanda Sexton
    2026/08/21
In this episode, Ruby Powers sits down with Amanda Sexton, founder and principal at Focus Works, a marketing agency dedicated exclusively to law firms, for a conversation about what's actually working in legal marketing right now — and what's quietly becoming obsolete. Amanda has been in marketing since college, fell into the legal space when most of her network turned out to be lawyers, and has spent years helping firms build predictable pipelines based on data and results rather than vanity metrics. She's here to cut through the noise on AI search, CRM, content strategy, and what it actually takes to stand out when every firm in your market sounds exactly the same. What we explore: ✅ How Clients Are Finding Firms Now: AI search is converting at significantly higher rates than Google — because by the time someone asks ChatGPT who to call, they've already done the research and are ready to hire. What that means for your marketing strategy and why diversifying beyond Google is no longer optional. ✅ GEO vs. SEO: What generative engine optimization actually is, why recency and external validation matter more than ever, and the one thing you can do right now — just ask Claude or ChatGPT what it thinks about your firm and see what comes back. ✅ CRM: The Biggest Missed Opportunity: Less than 10% of law firms use their CRM well — and some are still doing paper intake. Why that gap is costing firms clients they've already paid to attract, and what the data actually tells you once you start tracking it. ✅ The Five-Minute Window: The drop-off after five minutes of not responding to a new lead is dramatic. What to do if your intake team is also your legal assistant — and how to build a backup system so no lead falls through. ✅ Stop Sounding Like Everyone Else: Most firm websites and social content are nearly identical. How to find your firm's actual through-line, use client stories to build trust before the first call, and create the parasocial relationship that makes prospects feel like they already know you. ✅ LinkedIn Is Still the Most Underused Tool: Why company newsletters on LinkedIn are getting indexed at rates far higher than regular posts, why consistent personal presence on LinkedIn generates referrals firms didn't know they were missing, and why now is the time to lean in. ✅ Waterfall Content Strategy: One video, turned into clips, blogs, LinkedIn posts, newsletters, and GEO-optimized content — how to get the most out of the time you're already spending on content creation. If you've been doing the same marketing for years and wondering why it's not working the way it used to — this episode gives you the clearest picture of what's changed and what to do about it. 📣 SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS: 🚀 Law Firm Retreat: Power Up Your Practice Into Reality – January 2027 in Austin, TX. • Ep. 128: Olympian & Trial Lawyer: Discipline, Advocacy & Winning with Rich Ruohonen
    2026/08/18
In this episode, Ruby Powers sits down with Rich Ruohonen — partner at TSR Injury Law, six-time Minnesota Lawyer of the Year, and the oldest US Winter Olympian in history — for a conversation about what it actually takes to excel at two extraordinarily demanding careers at the same time. Rich has been curling competitively since the 1980s while building one of Minnesota's most successful personal injury trial practices. He's tried close to 1,000 cases and lost 12. He's won national championships, come agonizingly close to the Olympics multiple times, and finally made it this past February at 54 years old — called out of retirement when a teammate fell ill with a rare autoimmune condition. And while he was there, he did something that made headlines far beyond the ice. What we explore: ✅ How He Did Both: Writing opening statements on planes, working seven days a week in the off-season, leveraging remote work and Zoom appearances to curl in Saskatchewan and still show up for clients. What it actually looked like to build two careers in parallel for 30 years. ✅ What Elite Sports Taught Him About Trial Law: The Fight Club — how TSR's trial team practices opening statements in front of 50 staff members before ever walking into a courtroom. Why lawyers don't practice nearly enough. And why telling jurors it's their job is something most lawyers are too scared to do. ✅ The Crossover Between Curling and the Courtroom: Sports psychology, team dynamics, how you talk to people under pressure, and why the mental skills Rich developed on the ice made him a better lawyer — and vice versa. ✅ The Olympic Press Conference: Why Rich stepped up to speak about the rule of law and ICE enforcement in Minnesota during the Olympics, what he said, the backlash he received, and why he stands by every word. What using your platform as a lawyer and public figure actually looks like. ✅ Core Values That Drive Both: Discipline, determination, attitude, effort, and passion. Why none of his success feels like luck when you look at how he lives every day. Note: This episode includes discussion of immigration enforcement, politically charged events in Minnesota, and threats Rich received following his Olympic press conference. If you've ever wondered whether the skills that make a great lawyer and a great athlete are the same — this episode answers that question definitively. 📣 SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS: 🚀 Law Firm Retreat: Design Your Future – August 2026: Stop the daily grind and start architecting your next era. • Ep. 130: Profit First, Data Always: Law Firm Finance with Connie Kaplan
    2026/08/13

In this episode, Ruby Powers sits down with Connie Kaplan — immigration attorney, founder of Clear Horizon Legal Solutions, and CEO of Firm Balance, a bookkeeping firm dedicated exclusively to attorneys — for a conversation about the financial side of running a law firm that most owners are too busy, too emotional, or too intimidated to pay attention to.

Connie is an electrical engineer turned Wall Street IT professional turned immigration attorney. She opened her own firm 16 years ago and has been running it on systems, policies, and data ever since. When she noticed how many of her colleagues couldn't answer basic questions about their own numbers, she built a second business to fix that. She's here to share what she's learned from both sides of the table.

    What we explore:

Running on Data, Not Feelings: Why "I feel like we're busy so we should hire" is one of the most dangerous sentences in a law firm — and what the actual numbers need to tell you before you make that call.

The Revenue Math Most Firms Skip: How to work backward from your revenue goal to the exact number of leads, consultations, and conversion rates you need — and why not knowing these numbers means you're flying blind.

Billing and Collections That Actually Work: Invoice every two weeks, not monthly. Give clients short deadlines. Write descriptions that explain what you did and why. Stop working on matters where the client hasn't paid. Every one of these habits moves the needle.

You Are Not a Bank: Why payment plans that extend beyond the life of the case are a trap, how to structure your retainer agreement to protect yourself, and the psychology behind giving discounts versus charging surcharges.

Track Time Even on Flat Fee Cases: Why internal time tracking matters for profitability analysis, how weighted workloads prevent your team from burning out on the wrong cases, and what happens when you discover the wrong person is in the wrong seat.

Profit First & Proper Bookkeeping: Why doing your own bookkeeping is the biggest red flag Connie sees at law firm booths — and why having the right chart of accounts, the right financial team, and a tax strategist who meets with you quarterly changes everything.

If you've ever made a business decision based on a feeling instead of a number — this episode is your starting point.
