Modern civilization is something of a privilege for you and me, especially those of us living in developed nations - much of it has been built on the backs of hard, unforgiving work from centuries ago, when men and women were enslaved and forced to extract resources from countries far, far away. Such is the case with Potosí, the richest mountain in history.
After silver ore veins were discovered purely by luck by a Bolivian llama farmer named Diego Huallpa, the Spanish colonizers (already in the area) descended and began the world's largest silver extraction efforts of the time.
To call Potosí, or Sumaq Orck'o, in Quechua, a silver-rich mountain is an understatement. In today's episode of the Learn Spanish with Stories podcast, we'll help you understand just how crucial this mountain turned out to be for the Spanish Empire, and the world as a whole!
