  • Rules of the Franchise
    2026/06/13

Before we can argue about the best franchises in pop culture, we first have to answer a much more difficult question: what actually qualifies as a franchise in the first place?

But before we get there, the conversation takes a detour into the changing landscape of traditions. From local customs and community events to some of the recent changes around the NFL, we discuss how things evolve over time and whether some of the experiences we grew up with are slowly fading away. Is change inevitable, or are we losing something along the way?

Once we get to the heart of the episode, it's time to lay the groundwork for future Pop Culture Roulette debates. We set out to establish a baseline for what makes an entertainment property a true franchise. Is it simply having multiple entries? Do spin-offs count? What role do merchandise, expanded universes, reboots, and cultural impact play? Can a property become a franchise without ever reaching mainstream popularity? The questions are easy—the answers, not so much.

As the discussion unfolds, we quickly discover that drawing lines in pop culture is harder than it sounds. Definitions get challenged, exceptions emerge, and gray areas become the norm. Which means we're probably setting ourselves up for plenty of future arguments, but that's a problem for another episode.

And because we apparently weren't making things complicated enough, we also take a swing at defining the differences between sci-fi, sci-fantasy, and sci-horror. What separates science fiction from fantasy with futuristic paint? When does horror become the dominant genre? Are some of our favorite movies and series sitting right on the border between all three? We attempt to make sense of the labels that fans have been debating for decades.

This episode may not settle every argument, but it does establish the rules we'll be using when those arguments inevitably arrive.

Listen now and join the conversation! What qualifies as a franchise in your book? And where do you draw the line between sci-fi, sci-fantasy, and sci-horror?

  • Quest for Second Place: The Jessica Bracket
    2026/06/06

Quest for Second Place: The Jessica Bracket

Some competitions start with a wide-open field. This one started with a champion already crowned.

With Jessica firmly holding the undisputed number-one spot in our personal rankings, this week on Pop Culture Roulette we turned our attention to a much tougher question: who deserves second place? To find out, we assembled a bracket featuring famous Jessicas from across movies, television, music, and pop culture and put them head-to-head in a battle for the silver medal.

Each matchup forced us to consider career accomplishments, cultural impact, memorable performances, and just how much these Jessicas have shaped the entertainment landscape. Some choices came easily, others sparked heated debate, and a few results challenged our expectations as the bracket narrowed toward a single finalist.

In the end, only one contender could emerge as the greatest Jessica not named Jessica. Whether your favorite made a deep run or suffered an early upset, this episode is packed with laughs, nostalgia, and plenty of spirited discussion about some of pop culture's most recognizable names.

Listen along, fill out your own bracket, and let us know who you think deserved the runner-up spot. Did we get it right, or was your Jessica robbed of her chance at second place?

Be sure to subscribe, leave a review, and join the conversation on social media. We want to hear your picks and see how your bracket compares to ours.

  • The NFL Cinematic Universe
    2026/05/24

The NFL schedule release videos have officially become their own form of entertainment… so naturally we had to break them down like they were blockbuster movie trailers. With Jeremy out this week, Justin and Nicholas took a deep dive into the weirdest, funniest, most over-the-top schedule reveals from around the league and debated which teams absolutely nailed it and which ones maybe should’ve left the editing software closed. From chaotic mascots to internet meme overload, the NFL somehow turned a spreadsheet into must-watch television.

Of course, being Packers fans, we couldn’t stop there. After surviving the cinematic universe of schedule videos, we rolled straight into a full Green Bay Packers season prediction episode. Game-by-game picks, bold takes, moments of panic, unreasonable optimism, and at least one matchup that immediately turned into an argument — everything you’d want from two fans trying to talk themselves into a Super Bowl run before Week 1 even exists.

It’s part football analysis, part comedy roast, and part proof that sports fans will absolutely convince themselves of anything in May. So grab your playbook, your conspiracy board, and maybe a cheesehead while we try to figure out what the 2026 NFL season might actually look like.

Listen now wherever you get your podcasts, join the debate with your own season predictions, and tell us which schedule release video deserved the Lombardi Trophy.

  • The Great Pop Culture Bake-Off
    2026/05/09

This episode of Pop Culture Roulette goes a little old school in the best way possible, with Jeremy out this time, the discussion shifts into a looser, more nostalgic hangout vibe—less structure, more hot takes, and a lot of love for the world of food TV.

The conversation digs into favorite cooking shows across eras, the TV personalities and chefs who’ve defined the genre, and what actually makes a cooking show worth watching beyond just the recipes. From competition chaos to cozy comfort viewing, there’s a lot unpacked about why these shows stick with us—and why some of these chefs feel like celebrities in their own right. Somewhere in the mix, the idea of getting one of these culinary icons onto the show starts sounding less like a joke and more like a mission.

It’s also one of those episodes where the conversation just keeps rolling—jumping from legendary formats to underrated gems, to what food TV says about pop culture as a whole. And yes, there’s absolutely a moment where everyone agrees that cooking shows are basically their own emotional support genre at this point.

If you’ve ever had a comfort cooking show, rooted for a reality chef meltdown, or thought “we could totally get them on the podcast,” this one’s for you. Tune in, join the conversation, and let us know which cooking shows and chefs belong in the pop culture hall of fame—and which ones you think we should try to book next.

Listen, subscribe, and share the episode with someone who still argues about the best cooking show of all time. And hit us up with your picks—we might just build the guest list from your suggestions.

Also a quick shout-out to Bee's BBQ in Cincinnati for having some really good food. @beesotr

  • Sequel Wars: Better Than the Original?
    2026/04/25

Are sequels actually better… or are we all just lying to ourselves?

This week on Pop Culture Roulette, we spin straight into one of the most heated debates in entertainment: when does a sequel outshine the original? Armed with cold, hard numbers from Rotten Tomatoes, we put some of the biggest franchises under the microscope and let the scores guide the chaos.

From beloved classics to surprising follow-ups, we go head-to-head debating whether the critics got it right—or completely missed the mark. Does a higher score really mean a better movie, or are some originals untouchable no matter what the numbers say?

Along the way, we uncover shocking score gaps, defend controversial takes, and question whether Rotten Tomatoes is the hero or villain of this entire debate. Expect passionate arguments, unexpected agreements, and at least a few moments where the stats make absolutely no sense.

So… is the sequel better? Or are we just overthinking it?

Jump in, play along, and let us know where you stand—because this one gets heated.

👉 Make sure to follow, share the episode, and send us your favorite “better than the original” sequels—we might feature them in a future showdown.

  • Bunnies, Brackets & Candy-Fueled Chaos
    2026/04/04

Spring has officially arrived, and Pop Culture Roulette is celebrating the only way we know how—with a chaotic mix of debates, nostalgia, and an absolutely stacked candy bracket. This week, Jeremy takes control of the wheel and throws Justin and Nicholas into a series of Easter-themed debates that quickly spiral from lighthearted fun into surprisingly passionate arguments. What starts as simple holiday preferences turns into full-on defenses, bold stances, and a few takes that might raise some eyebrows.

And that’s just how things get started.

The real centerpiece of the episode is a full tournament-style bracket to crown the greatest Easter candy of all time. From iconic chocolate staples to colorful, sugar-packed classics, every matchup brings tough decisions, unexpected disagreements, and a whole lot of second-guessing. Some picks feel like no-brainers…until they aren’t. Nostalgia clashes with taste, tradition battles innovation, and more than once, the outcome comes down to pure chaos.

As the bracket unfolds, alliances shift, arguments get louder, and a few shocking eliminations leave everyone questioning everything they thought they knew about Easter candy. Will a legendary favorite dominate the field? Will an underrated sleeper sneak its way to the top? Or will the final winner leave everyone stunned?

Between the debates and the bracket, this episode captures everything we love about the holiday—fun, ridiculousness, and just a little bit of controversy. Whether you’re in it for the candy, the competition, or the chaos, there’s something here for everyone.

Did we get it right, or completely blow it? Let us know your ultimate Easter candy rankings, share your bracket winners, and don’t forget to follow, rate, and spread the word about Pop Culture Roulette wherever you listen.

  • Debatable Hits & Roundhouse Kicks
    2026/03/28

This week on Pop Culture Roulette, we take on a local bracket from 102.9 The Hog… and almost immediately abandon the idea of blindly accepting it. Instead, we spend most of our time asking a much more important question: why are some of these songs even on this list in the first place?

As we work through the matchups, the episode turns into a full-on takedown of the bracket itself. We’re not just debating winners—we’re calling out the biggest offenders, breaking down which artists absolutely do not belong, and questioning the decisions of whoever put this thing together. Some picks feel lazy, some feel completely off-base, and a few make us rethink the entire premise.

And yet… despite all of that chaos, we still play the game. Round by round, argument by argument, we push forward, balancing legitimate debates with pure disbelief until somehow—against all odds—we actually land on a winner. It’s messy, it’s heated, and it probably makes less sense the longer it goes… but that’s exactly how this bracket deserved to be handled. All the while, we keep things grounded with ongoing tributes to Chuck Norris, because if anyone can bring order to chaos, it’s a well-timed roundhouse kick.

In the end, this isn’t just about what song comes out on top—it’s about everything that went wrong getting there.

👉 Give it a listen and jump into the argument: which songs had no business being here, and did we still get the winner right?
