What if everything you believed about your identity turned out to be a mystery?

In this compelling episode of Plot Twist Radio, host Erin Egnatz welcomes author and adoption reform advocate Patricia Knight Meyer, whose extraordinary journey to uncover her biological roots revealed a shocking truth: the adoption she had believed was legal her entire life had apparently never been finalized.

At just 12 years old, Patricia learned that her adoptive parents didn't have her birth certificate and weren't even certain of her birthday. By 18, she discovered that the state of Texas had no record of her adoption. What followed was a decades-long search through historical birth records, family secrets, and unexpected discoveries that would ultimately lead her to both biological parents.

Patricia shares the remarkable true story behind her memoir, Wonderland: Memoir of a Black Market Adoption, including the questionable attorney who facilitated her placement, the emotional complexities of reuniting with her birth mother, and the healing relationship she developed with a biological father who never knew she existed.

Together, Erin and Patricia explore adoption trauma, family secrets, identity, generational trauma, and the importance of transparency in adoption practices. Patricia also discusses how writing her memoir became an unexpected journey toward healing and offers valuable advice to adoptees searching for their biological families.
