  • The Conversation You’re Avoiding Is Costing You
    2026/10/20

Sometimes what looks like peace is really just avoidance.

Nobody is arguing. Nobody is upset. Everything seems fine on the surface—but underneath, frustration, hurt, resentment, or an important truth is being left unspoken.

In this episode of Pilot Light, Josh explores the difference between peacekeeping and peacemaking—and why loving people well sometimes requires walking directly into an uncomfortable conversation.

Peacekeepers ask, “How do I keep everybody happy?”

Peacemakers ask, “What does this relationship need in order to be healthy?”

You’ll hear why silence isn’t always kindness, why avoided conversations rarely disappear, and why clarity and kindness have to work together. Josh also explores one of the hardest lessons for people who naturally want harmony: someone being disappointed with you does not automatically mean you’ve done something wrong.

Real relationships require courage. They require the ability to tell the truth without attacking, listen without becoming defensive, set boundaries without becoming cruel, and allow people to have feelings you don’t have to fix.

This week’s Flame Challenge is simple—but it may not be easy: have one conversation you’ve been avoiding.

Don’t enter it to win, punish, or unload everything you’ve rehearsed in your head. Enter it to create understanding.

Bring clarity. Bring kindness. Bring courage. And leave room to listen.

    Because peacekeeping avoids tension.

Peacemaking walks through it toward something healthier.

  • The Present of Presence
    2026/10/13

When someone we care about is hurting, our instinct is often to fix it.

We offer advice. We make a plan. We search for solutions. We start explaining what they should do next—sometimes before they’ve even finished telling us what happened.

But what if the person sitting across from us doesn’t need an answer?

What if they simply need to feel heard?

In this episode of Pilot Light, Josh explores the difference between helping someone and helping them in the way they actually need. Sometimes our desire to fix a problem comes from love. Other times, it comes from our own discomfort with sitting beside someone when we can’t make everything better.

You’ll discover why advice offered too quickly can feel like dismissal, why good questions can be more powerful than good answers, and why supporting someone doesn’t always mean removing the struggle they’re facing.

Josh also shares one simple question that can completely change a conversation:

“Do you want me to help you solve this, or do you just need me to listen?”

This week’s Flame Challenge is to have one conversation where your goal isn’t to advise, teach, or fix—but simply to understand.

Because sometimes the person in front of you doesn’t need your wisdom.

    They need your presence.

They need to know that even when everything isn’t okay, they don’t have to face it alone.

  • Why Do Strangers Get the Best of You?
    2026/10/06

We can be patient, attentive, and gracious with people all day long...then come home and have almost nothing left for the people we love most.

    Why does that happen?

In this episode of Pilot Light, Josh takes an honest look at how easy it is to give our best energy to work, responsibilities, strangers, social media, and everyone who needs something from us...while the people closest to us quietly receive whatever remains.

This isn’t about being perfect at home. We all get tired. Life gets heavy. The question is whether our exhaustion has become a pattern where everyone else consistently receives our patience and attention while our family gets our leftovers.

Josh explores why presence is more than simply being in the same room, how familiarity can slowly turn into carelessness, and why our attention may be one of the most meaningful ways we communicate love.

Because healthy relationships usually aren’t built in spectacular moments. They’re built on ordinary Tuesdays—in conversations, small acts of service, inside jokes, listening, showing up, and making someone feel like, for a few minutes, nothing else matters more.

This week’s Flame Challenge stays close to home: choose one person you love and give them thirty minutes of completely undivided attention. No phone. No television. No multitasking. Just be there.

Go do meaningful work. Lead. Serve. Encourage people. Use everything God put inside you.

But don’t become so busy lighting fires everywhere else that the people waiting at home are sitting in the dark.

Give the people you love something better than your leftovers.

    Give them you.
