South Dakota’s getting a massive $52 million—possibly up to $73 million—from Meta to combat social media’s damage on youth, with funds spread over ten years. The state must act wisely: invest in afterschool programs, sports, arts, mental health, libraries, and community centers—especially in rural areas where access is hardest. History warns that without clear plans and accountability, settlement money can vanish into general spending. Leaders need a public, youth-driven strategy that boosts—not replaces—existing programs, with full transparency on results. This is more than cash—it’s a chance to build real opportunities, friendships, and support systems so young South Dakotans can truly thrive.

A sudden, torrential thunderstorm crashed into a South Dakota farm during a birthday party, turning pastures into lakes and leaving a single mom owner, Kim Hubers, scrambling without full insurance. Rocks slid, mulch vanished, corn threatened by mold, and even llamas escaped—though they didn’t get far. Weather apps failed to predict the downpour, adding to the chaos as kids watched their home flood. But amid the mess, neighbors rallied—bringing tools, offering hands, and lifting spirits. The farm’s resilience shines as it plans to reopen next weekend, buoyed by community support.
