Eight years ago, the Phoenix Suns traded a generational talent for local pride — choosing Deandre Ayton with the No. 1 pick over Luka Doncic, who’s since become an MVP-caliber superstar. Former coach Igor Kokoskov revealed the owner favored Ayton for his Arizona roots, but the team worried Doncic and Devin Booker would overlap too much offensively. Ayton delivered dominant college stats and even led the Suns to the NBA Finals in 2021 — yet now he’s on his fourth team, while Doncic thrives as a Lakers star. The “what if” still echoes: what if Phoenix had drafted Doncic instead?

The Phoenix Suns may have missed out on drafting Luka Doncic in 2018 due to former owner Robert Sarver’s strong ties to the University of Arizona, sparking outrage over how personal bias could derail a franchise’s future. As Luka ascended into superstardom, the Suns struggled to find his caliber of talent — fueling speculation that Sarver’s loyalty cost them a generational player. This story adds another layer to Sarver’s controversial legacy, reminding fans how one person’s decisions can ripple through a team’s destiny for years.

Rasheer Fleming’s sophomore season with the Phoenix Suns is poised to be a breakout year—raw talent, elite length, and three-point range make him a perfect fit for a team building its future. After inconsistent minutes last year, he exploded in the final 25 games, averaging nearly seven points and three rebounds. With a four-year, $8.7M guaranteed deal, the Suns are counting on him to elevate his game: faster decisions, consistent energy, and seamless execution under pressure. With Mark Williams sidelined, Fleming could see expanded roles—even at center—and prove himself as a reliable rotational piece—or even a core contributor. This season isn’t just about stats—it’s about growth, confidence, and becoming the player fans rally behind.

The Phoenix Suns face a daunting 2026-27 season with starting center Mark Williams sidelined by surgery, leaving Coach Jordan Ott and a thin frontcourt to navigate. With only two other big men on standard contracts, Khaman Maluach and Oso Ighodaro must step up—especially on the boards—as the team’s offense struggled and defense shone last year. Miles Bridges’ arrival adds intrigue, while the roster’s depth, speed, and chemistry offer hope. Success may look different this time: winning record, rookie breakout, or even 50 wins. Training camp starts in two weeks—expectations are high, but the real test begins now.

The Phoenix Suns just pulled off a bold move, trading an unprotected first-round pick for Miles Bridges — a scoring machine poised to instantly upgrade their offense. With Devin Booker needing a dynamic forward and the team lacking that since Kevin Durant, Bridges fits the bill. This isn’t the first time Phoenix has bet on a “Michigan Guy” who delivered under pressure — owner Mat Ishbia and GM Brian Gregory have already proven they can turn doubters into believers. And with Coach Jordan Ott’s defensive acumen, Bridges’ potential flaws could be masked. This could be the next Michigan State alum to ignite the Suns — and this time, it might just work.

The 2018 NBA draft was a golden class, but the Suns shocked everyone by taking Deandre Ayton first — not Luka Doncic, Trae Young, or Jaren Jackson Jr. Former coach Igor Kokoskov revealed owner Robert Sarver had already decided on Ayton, dismissing Doncic’s true potential and overlooking how much he’d overlap with Devin Booker. Despite coaching Doncic to a EuroBasket title, Kokoskov felt Ayton was the easier pick — a local favorite who filled an immediate need. But history proved Doncic’s ceiling far exceeded Ayton’s, making this one of the most talked-about draft decisions in recent memory.
