The author of this epistle is the Apostle Paul. As he begins the letter, Paul makes it clear that he is the one sending it, saying, “Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons” (Philippians 1:1).

Philippians chapter 1 is the opening of the letter that the Apostle Paul sent to the church in Philippi while he was imprisoned. The church in Philippi was the first church Paul established in the region of Macedonia, and it had a relationship of deep love and cooperation with him. That is why this letter is filled not with rebuke but with thanksgiving, joy, and exhortation. Chapter 1 proceeds from greetings and a prayer of thanksgiving, to a report on Paul’s own circumstances in prison, and then to an exhortation toward a life worthy of the gospel. In what follows, we will first explain each passage from a general point of view, and then look into its meaning together from the perspective of the gospel of the water and the Spirit.

Today’s Scripture passage is the letter that the Apostle Paul sent to the church in Philippi. Paul calls himself “a bondservant of Jesus Christ,” and he greets all the saints in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons. Here we can clearly see what it is that makes the church one. The church is not a place made one by human affection or personal acquaintance. The church is a place made one by the gospel.

Beloved saints, today, through the words of Philippians chapter 1, verses 1 through 11, we want to share together how our life of faith, the life of us who have received the remission of sins, is preserved and grows.
The Apostle Paul, writing to the saints of the church in Philippi, said that he thanked God whenever he thought of them. Why did he give thanks? Because from the first day until now they had fellowship in the gospel. They were not people who merely said with their lips that they believed in Jesus. They were people who had fellowship together in the gospel Paul preached, that is, the gospel of the water and the Spirit—that Jesus Christ bore the sins of the world by receiving baptism, received the judgment of those sins on the Cross, and rose again, and so saved us completely.

Beloved saints, today, through the words of Philippians chapter 1, verses 12 through 30, we want to think together about what the Christian life is.
The Apostle Paul was imprisoned while preaching the gospel. But he did not regard his situation as a misfortune. Rather, he said, “But I want you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel” (Philippians 1:12).

He was put in chains while preaching the gospel. Seen with fleshly eyes, his situation looked very unfortunate. He had no freedom, his future was uncertain, and he did not know when he might die.

When we read Philippians, the epistle of the Apostle Paul, we can see fully what kind of faith the Apostle Paul had and what his spiritual state was. The Apostle Paul confessed that whether he lived or died, he wanted Christ to be magnified in his body, and that for him to live was Christ, so to die was also gain. This is truly great faith. It means his whole heart was directed solely toward God. In body and in heart, he set the purpose of his life on Christ being magnified. He existed because of Christ, worked for Christ, ate for Christ, and lived for Christ. He existed only for the will and purpose of Christ. We see that there was nothing at all for his own purposes.
