European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has stunned the world by proposing Canada become the EU’s first “associate member” — a bold move to deepen ties amid global chaos, war on Europe’s borders, and rising competition. The proposal, met with a standing ovation in Brussels and welcomed by Canadian PM Mark Carney, aims to forge stronger alliances around shared values on AI, climate, and democracy. While details remain vague, potential areas include tech, defense, and Arctic cooperation — all part of a strategic pivot as Canada seeks alternatives to U.S. trade tensions. But hurdles loom: EU members must agree, past flexible alliances have stalled, and critics question if von der Leyen is overpromising without a clear roadmap.

Iran claims it captured a U.S. underwater drone in the Strait of Hormuz, calling it a major intelligence win and highlighting its advanced tech — but the U.S. military counters that the drone was already broken, outdated, and carried no sensitive gear. With tensions reigniting after a quiet August, oil prices are surging again, fueling global economic unease. While the U.S. insists operations continue as normal, Iran plans to release images of the drone to bolster its propaganda narrative — turning what the Pentagon calls a glitch into a geopolitical flashpoint.
