People Like Us was a two-part NBC miniseries that aired May 13–14, 1990, based on the bestselling novel by Dominick Dunne. It was a glossy, sometimes vicious drama about the secrets, scandals, marriages and social maneuvering of wealthy New York society.Eva Marie Saint played Lil Van Degan Altemus, an extremely wealthy, socially prominent and emotionally cold matriarch. It was quite different from the warm or elegant characters audiences often associated with her.One of Lil's most dramatic storylines concerns her son Hubie (Gary Frank), who is gay and dying of AIDS. The story examines Lil's inability to accept both her son's sexuality and his illness. Contemporary reviews singled out Saint's performance, particularly the painful scenes between Lil and Hubie. The Washington PostAnd this is the important part in terms of Eva Marie Saint's career: the performance won her the 1990 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Special. TV GuideSo Saint accomplished something fairly remarkable: 36 years after winning an Oscar for On the Waterfront, she won a major Emmy for People Like Us.It is also a fascinating role to revisit today because Lil is not particularly likable. Saint was playing against her established screen persona and portraying a woman whose wealth, social standing and concern with appearances have left her frighteningly ill-equipped to deal compassionately with her own son's crisis. That gives her some of the miniseries' most uncomfortable material. RIP Eva Marie Saint who passed away this week at 102!
